Phillips de Pury & Company has announced highlights from its Under the Influence auction to be held Sept. 23 in New York. The sale opens Phillips de Pury’s Fall auction season with a selection of contemporary art.
Notable items offered for sale include Vik Muniz’s 2005 portrait of Jackie Kennedy Onassis (Pictures of Diamonds), estimated to sell between $100,000 and $150,000. This shining image of the former First Lady is composed from more than 3,000 diamonds originally supplied by a diamond trade collector and patron of the artist.
Muniz flattens three dimensional materials and transforms them into a two-dimensional photographic portrait. The resulting portrait of Ms. Kennedy shines with her poise, grace, and spirit of its iconic subject.
Other items offered for sale include Tony Matelli’s small 1996 sculpture Lost & Sick, estimated to sell between $30,000 and $40,000. The sculpture portrays three boy scouts working hard and fighting fatigue, desperation, and despair amidst a barren landscape.
Mark Handforth’s 2005 sculpture Bearded Snake is made from a bar of steel, which has been transformed into a strip, and has been spray painted and adorned with a lit candle resting on its head. The piece is expected to sell between $100,000 and $150,000. The auction will take place Sept. 23rd at 12 p.m. and 3 p.m. at Phillips de Pury & Company (450 Park Ave.) (212) 940-1200.
