‘Twenty Wishes’ is a Blossom Street Book, a novel written by Debbie Macomber, the #1 New York Times bestselling author and a leading voice in women’s fiction. This 360-page book was published by MIRA Books in 2008. Friends come together on Valentine’s Day to celebrate and decide to each make of a list of twenty wishes of things they’ve always wanted to do to give them hope for the future.
Anne Marie Roche, owner of Blossom Street Books, is a 38-year old widow whose husband died suddenly of a heart attack. Anne Marie became friends with Elise Beaumont, a frequent patron of the bookstore store, who is also a widow in her mid-sixties, who lost her husband to cancer. Lillie Higgins and her daughter Barbie Foster, whose husbands mutually died in a plane crash, met at the book group started at Annie’s bookstore to help women adjust to widowhood.
The four widows came together on Valentine’s Day for a small party to celebrate their friendships and memories. While trying to come up with ideas to help overcome their feelings of sadness, loss, and being alone, they came up with several suggestions of things they wanted to accomplish in their life, especially to find love again. They mutually agreed to each create a list of twenty wishes to help inspire and motivate them.
Each of the women work on their list of things they want to experience in life. Each of the women have different desires, but want the same thing in the end; to find love and be happy again. Are their wishes ever fulfilled? Do they ever find a new love?
Debbie Macomber is a truly gifted writer and one who has an exceptional understanding of individual and family unit wants and needs. She clearly depicts each character’s emotions and wishes to the point where you are constantly rooting for each wish to come true for each one. This story provided an excellent idea to help one move forward in life when things appear bleak. The author also shows how friendships come in different shapes, sizes, ages, and so on.
Every woman wants to fulfill specific wishes in her life. Whether you are single, married or widowed, you can clearly relate and understand the emotions each character is going through and what they are looking for since that is what all women look for. As you are reading their stories, you actually begin to feel like a part of the group.
Although, you can be sure that a wish list is not new to many people, whether written down or not, this story reemphasizes that you determine what you want in life and that wishes can actually come true. This is a truly wonderful book that is a fast-paced read and a real page-turner. It is a highly recommended read.
