President Barack Obama seems to have a tough road ahead if he wants to convince Spokane residents to support a re-election bid. During the 2008 election, when Senator Obama was polling at his highest approval ratings, he failed to win over the voters in Spokane. In Spokane County, it was Senator John McCain that beat Obama in 2008, as he received roughly 3,000 more votes in the election. It was one of 19 counties that favored McCain in that particular election.
Overall, in Washington State, President Obama drew more than 450,000 more total votes than Sen. McCain during that 2008 election. The swing in King County was one of the big reasons, and it didn’t come as that much of a surprise in a state that hasn’t been won by a Republican candidate since Ronald Reagan did it back in 1984. The 57.4% to 40.7% victory in the 2008 election was one of the most lop-sided though. In comparison, John Kerry received the support of Washington State in 2004 with just 52.8%; compared to the 45.6% that George Bush received. And yes, Spokane favored Bush in that election.
With recent news that President Obama has taken another hit in his approval rating, it raises the question about whether he can find that same support from voters in Washington State this time around. Local news affiliate KHQ took to Facebook to ask area residents what he would need to do in order to win a re-election campaign. To classify the responses to that question, it goes without saying that there were quite a few frustrated readers that feel that ship has already sailed. If gives the incumbent President an uphill battle as the election season really begins.
Here is just a small taste of how people answered the question, “What does President Obama need to do to win re-election?”
Nikki Anderson posted, “Get us out of debt before its time to reelect. Get our troops home too.”
Loanne Rickard Odell wrote, “Nothing he can do will make any difference….he is catering to his left wing buddies who want to control and collapse the economy, and looks to me they are well on their way.”
Jason Wise stated, “quit pandering to corporate interests and grow a backbone.”
Ginny Ducommun Hasting posted, “NOTHING!!!! shouldn’t be the President in the first place has totally messed this Nation up!!! Never ke3pt promise and the only reason he got that position n the first place people were blinded by his BS and money bought his position. There are some others in the house and senate that should just go away also.”
Waxy Eightzeroeight posted, “Call out the GOP for being corporate lapdogs. Appear to stay in the center fiscally. Raise taxes on the rich. GO on an all out offensive on GOP candidates who have nothing more than a 6th grade understanding of economics.”
Anna Rockne simply noted, “i think its time for a new president.”
