Seriously, why isn’t Minecraft on Steam? That has to be one of the most asked questions in the Minecraft community. There’s a Steam group, but no game on Steam. Wackiness. Well, Notch as finally come out and given a reason to why the blockbuster is not on Steam.
“Being on Steam limits a lot of what we’re allowed to do with the game, and how we’re allowed to talk to our users.”, he said to a fan at PAX. “We (probably?) wouldn’t be able to, say, sell capes or have a map market place on minecraft.net that works with steam customers in a way that keeps Valve happy” He then went on to say, “We are talking to Valve about this, but I definitely understand their reasons for wanting to control their platform. There’s a certain inherent incompatibility between what we want to do and what they want to do.”
Well, there you have it. There’s no big Newell v.s. Persson argument or anything, just unfortunate limitations that a dreamer doesn’t want to have to deal with. I can respect that.
