In any campaign for the Presidency, media attention is key. And in an era in which Americans get their news on the run in the midst of super-busy lives that are complicated by the struggle to make a living, pay the bills, raise the kids, and avoid a mortgage default, media attention is even more important, especially when a story is the lead newsmaker for any particular news cycle.
Americans, through no fault of their own, are limited by the restrictions of time to the lead stories and headlines. And in a political campaign if a candidate cannot manage to become the subject of lead stories on a fairly regular basis, then they will not get the attention of most Americans.
And this brings us to the question posed by the headline of this article today–why are the media ignoring Ron Paul?
Further, why are some of the other major candidates failing to garner the attention of the mainstream media moguls when they sit down to write their lead news stories?
The Pew Research Center for Excellence in Journalism did an in-depth study on the subject. PRC monitored all of the media in order to tabulate who is getting the most media attention, and who is being essentially ignored. The results are very telling.
Not surprisingly Barack Obama has been the subject of the vast majority of campaign lead news stories since he officially launched his bid for re-election. A whopping 220 lead newsmaker stories have been written about Obama on the campaign trail. Coming in second is Republican Mitt Romney, but the number of lead news stories about him stands at 120–roughly half of that of Obama. Newt Gingrich is next with 112, although he has not managed to break out of the low single digits when likely GOP primary voters are asked who they prefer as their candidate. Just under Gingrich is Michele Bachmann, which is somewhat of a surprise until one considers the nature of the stories that have been reported about her. Bachmann is routinely portrayed in a negative light by the mainstream media, and thus, she is the recipient of a significant number of lead newsmaker stories so that the talking heads can unleash their pre-determined talking points, which always vilify true conservatives.
But perhaps the most troubling fact of all is that Ron Paul has been the subject of only 27 lead newsmaker stories reported in the mainstream media, which places him third from the bottom, just ahead of Rick Santorum and Herman Cain. Cain’s lack of media attention is another troubling indication of the mainstream media’s not-so-hidden agenda, and his snub by the news moguls is surely the subject of further investigation.
To be sure, Ron Paul is problematic to many conservatives, including this writer, not because of his stance on issues such as the scope and size of government, taxes, the economy, government spending, and such, but because of his statements on terrorism, Israel, and foreign policy in general.
However, Paul’s is a voice that needs to be heard, particularly when it comes to what is perhaps the most pressing issue of the day, which is the crumbling U.S. economy, the dubious actions of the Federal Reserve, runaway government spending, and the general philosophy of the Framers that the smaller the government the greater the level of personal freedom.
And what is even more puzzling about the media blackout is the fact that Ron Paul has a significant base of support that is consistent and enthusiastic, so much so that he was able to come in a close second to Bachmann in the Iowa Straw Poll.
Even Jon Huntsman has been the subject of more lead newsmaker stories than Ron Paul, which is odd given that Huntsman has not been able to gain any traction whatsoever in his campaign and is viewed by most as a losing enterprise.
Thus, it would appear that Ron Paul is being deliberately hosed by the mainstream media. And when one considers the popularity of others such as Sarah Palin, who received only 85 top newsmaker stories, it is entirely fair to wonder what is going on in the ivory towers of the media elite who work in tandem during campaigns to push an agenda.
