The new Dancing With the Stars cast is ready to begin Season 13, and there are some big names on the cast. The celebrity cast will be announced Monday night during ABC’s Bachelor Pad, and Scottsdale fans are anxious to hear the official announcement. One of the celebrities from the supposed cast that fans are buzzing about is JR Martinez. Who is Martinez, and will he have the fan support to stick around this season on Dancing With the Stars?
JR Martinez is known for his role as Brot Monroe on the soap opera All My Children. He began on the show on November 7, 2008. In addition to his role on the soap, he is a motivational speaker and spokesman who travels the country to speak to veterans groups, schools and corporations.
Martinez was born in Shreveport, LA. He has two sisters who were raised with his mother’s family in El Salvador, and his sister Anabel died before JR ever had the chance to meet her. When he was nine-years-old, JR moved with his mother to Arkansas. He lived there until he was 17, then they moved to Dalton, GA. He played football in Georgia, and dreamed of becoming a professional football player until he suffered an injury as a senior.
JR entered the Army in September, 2002 and he was deployed to Iraq in February, 2003. That April, a Humvee he was driving hit a landmine and he suffered extensive burns to over 40% of his body along with a great deal of smoke inhalation. After being evacuated to Germany for care, he went to Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio for extended rehab and recovery. Martinez spent 34 months at the facility, having 32 surgeries to try to repair the damage and injuries he suffered.
While he was working on his recovery, a nurse asked him to speak to another burn patient who was withdrawn and depressed. JR discovered he could use his experience to help others, and he began sharing his story with others. He delivers a message on optimism and resilience to those groups he meets, and he is now a highly-sought after motivational speaker. In November, 2008 he began portraying Brot Monroe on All My Children. His storyline on the show mirrors his real-life experience of being injured in the Army. His character was originally paired with Beth Ehlers in a love story that fans embraced, and his character remains on the All My Children canvas in current stories.
Will JR Martinez have what it takes to succeed on the Dancing With the Stars dance floor? He certainly has shown he has the strength of character and work ethic to go after what he wants, and fans are sure to be rooting for him to stick around. Dancing With the Stars will air on Monday and Tuesday nights, beginning September 19. DWTS airs on ABC, Channel 15 in the Scottsdale area.
