After a terrible turnout for new releases last weekend, Hollywood is hoping that the trio of wide releases this week will pull people into the theater. We’ll have to see if the combination of Paul Rudd, Zoe Saldana, and the monster under your bed will do the trick.
Colombiana (Rated PG-13) – A child witnesses her parents being killed and grows up to work for her uncle as an assassin -all the while seeking her parents’ murderers. Does anyone not see where this is going just from the description of the plot? Despite starring Zoe Saldana, this one just doesn’t look like it has a lot going for it. And what is up with that title?
Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark (Rated R) – A young girl goes to live with her dad and his new wife only to discover the things that go bump in the night really do exist. Starring Katie Holmes, Guy Pearce, and Bailee Madison, this is one of the movies I’ve been waiting for ever since I heard it went into production. Based on a television movie from the 70’s, with a script written by Guillermo del Toro, the word of mouth on this is that it is truly terrifying. I can’t wait!
Our Idiot Brother (Rated R) – The tagline for this one is “Everyone has one.” If you don’t, you might want to look in the mirror. After getting out of prison, Ned (Paul Rudd) ends up moving in with each of his three sisters in turn as they try to help him get back on his feet. The trailer for this one looks really funny, and I’m hoping the movie lives up to it. Paul Rudd is one of my favorite actors, so I’ve been looking forward to seeing it.
I think the weekend will come down to a dual between Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark and The Help. I don’t know if the other two movies have generated enough buzz to really carry an opening weekend. The Help continues to play strong, but will most likely find itself back in the number two spot after the horror film.
