With today (July 26) being Mick Jagger’s birthday, we posed a question on Twitter asking what Rolling Stones song might have been a good one for the Beatles to do?
At first glance, the question seems a bit strange because the styles of the two groups went in different directions. Both were heavily influenced by older music. The Beatles tended more toward R&B and Motown plus the Sun Records sound, while the Rolling Stones were more blues-oriented.
Still, with songs written by Mick Jagger and Keith Richards, the question gets more interesting because many of their songs were more commercially oriented.
Any suggestions? One Twitter poster said “‘We love you’? ‘She’s a Rainbow’? My favorite fantasy: ‘Salt of the earth’ during the ‘Get Back’ sessions.” Another replied, “I think John (during certain periods of his life, anyway) would’ve felt right at home doing ‘Under My Thumb.'” A third suggested George Harrison singing “Brown Sugar.”
But a really intriguing idea was “Wild Horses” sung by Paul McCartney. Now we think THAT would be interesting.
Our answer to the question, by the way, would have been “The Last Time” sung by John Lennon. Imagine him singing that one. We think his vocal would have walked all over the Stones’ version.
