As many women start to breastfeed their child they often wonder if they will be able to produce enough milk in order to feed that child. When they are pregnant their doctor gives them information about what foods to avoid while they are pregnant but they don’t really know if they should be avoiding those same foods while breastfeeding.
Often women assume that they can eat whatever they want after they have their baby but don’t realize that what they eat can pass onto their baby through their breast milk.
Doctors recommend that in order for a woman to produce breast milk they need to consume an extra 500 calories per day along with 8-10 glasses of water. That seems like an excessive amount but in actuality they will burn those extra calories just by breastfeeding alone. Doctors also recommend that while a woman is breastfeeding she should drink water as she may become thirsty.
There are certain foods to avoid while breastfeeding as well as any prescription medications or over the counter medications that a woman may consume should be discussed thoroughly with her doctor. Some foods that may affect a baby’s digestion should be avoided such as spicy foods or any dairy products. Some babies can tolerate the different foods but others have a more sensitive digestive system. A woman should try to incorporate healthy foods into her diet while breastfeeding such as whole grains and fruits and vegetables. She can try a variety of foods to see what her baby can tolerate and remove or add foods as necessary.
