COMMENTARY from the liberterrain…
There was a time, about when the Libertarian Party was being formed, that libertarianism existed on the outer fringes of society. That fringe was populated by true libertarians and others who just loved life on the fringe.
Libertarianism is still on the fringe but it’s a much bigger fringe now. And that has fringe-loving libertarians looking for new fringes within that fringe.
Few seem to be content with just being libertarian. They have to be libertarian-conservatives or left libertarians or anarcho-libertarians or anarcho-capitalists or voluntaryists or agorists or some other libertarian-within-libertarian niche.
Ron Paul, for better or ill, is the best known person in America to which the “Libertarian” label has become attached. He likely pleases only the libertarian-within-libertarian niche that calls itself Libertarian-Republican.
He has at least one stance that repels every other niche-libertarian. His anti-abortion position repels libertarian feminists and their supporters. His states’ rights position gags anarchists. His frequent religious invocations drive away Objectivists. For everyone, it seems, one negative defeats all positives.
“Ron Paul Libertarianism,” in short, has become the enemy of “Perfect Libertarianism.”
One would think that the very blatant manner in which the institutional politicos and the mainstream media puppets routinely marginalize Paul by pretending he doesn’t exist would by itself be enough to stoke the rebellious fires of anti-establishment libertarians.
Jon Stewart did a brilliant comedic bit on this trivialization of Paul and his brand of libertarianism.
Like it or not, agree or not, Ron Paul is the closest thing we have to a nationally recognized libertarian right now. Sit back on your backsides and wait for Mr. or Ms. Perfect Libertarian to come along and you’ll be sitting forever.
Rejecting Paul’s libertarianism is like ridiculing a Corvette because it’s not a Lamborghini, or refusing to accept a pay raise because it’s not more than your male co-worker’s salary, or kicking the Playmate of the Year out of bed because she has freckles.
Don’t like Paul because he’s not the perfect libertarian? Chances are you’re not either, so who are you kidding?
He’s not the lesser of two evils; he’s the lesser of Perfect.
He’s not just Better Than Obama, he’s better than everyone.
At the very least he’s a step in the right direction.
So take the damned step and support him. You’re not compromising your principles; you’re pursuing them. One step at a time.
