Since childhood, Travis Clark, Hunter Thompsen, Drew Thompsen, and Danny Duncan have been an inseparable group of friends. They began playing music together at King Middle School, a place that will always be remembered in the name of their band, We The Kings. Formed in 2000 in Bradenton, Florida, the pop punk group has released three studio albums and four EPs under various stage names.
The quartet released their self-titled full-length debut album in 2007, which peaked at spot #151 on the Billboard 200. That same year, they placed a number of their songs on the social networking site Purevolume.com in hopes of gaining publicity. Shortly after, the group signed to S-Curve Records, a New York-based imprint of EMI Records. In 2008, We The Kings appeared on CBS’s The Early Show and Jimmy Kimmel Live to perform their hit “Check Yes Juliet” off their first album. The single has also been featured in video games such as Lego Rock Band.
The band’s popularity continued to grow, earning them interviews with magazines such as Alternative Press Magazine, Substream Music Press magazine, Kerrang!, and Black Velvet. They appeared on television networks such as MTV, where they were featured on the Friday Night Premiere and the second season of Silent Library. The group also hosts their own miniature series of webisodes, entitled “The King’s Carriage,” detailing life on their tour bus. We The Kings even hosted Radio Disney in August 2008.
In December 2009, the band released their second full-length album entitled Smile Kid. The album reached the #112 spot on the US music charts, and peaked at the #24 position on the US rock music charts. Singles from their second album include “Heaven Can Wait” and “We’ll Be a Dream” featuring Demi Lovato. Their most recent album, Sunshine State of Mind, was released on July 5th, 2011. It reached the #45 spot on the US music charts and hit #9 on the US rock charts, making it the group’s most successful album to date.
We The Kings has also been nominated for several awards including “Best New Artist” at the MTV Video Music Awards and “Choice Hook Up” at the Teen Choice Awards for their collaboration with Lovato. In 2008, they won the award for “Best Pop Punk Artist” at the Top In Rock Awards.
The childhood friends are not strangers to touring, beginning in 2007 on a tour called Tourzilla, which featured headliners Boys Like Girls, All Time Low, and The Audition. They have also toured with bands including Cobra Starship, Cute Is What We Aim For, Forever The Sickest Kids, and The Cab. In the summer of 2011, they began the “Friday is Forever” tour with the support of performances by The Summer Set, The Downtown Fiction, Hot Chelle Rae, and Action Item.
We The Kings will be performing live at the Newport Music Hall in Columbus on Saturday, July 30th as a part of their “Friday is Forever” tour. Tickets can be purchased at the door for $15. Doors open for admission at 5:30 pm.
