Just half an hour from Ann Arbor lies the Waterloo Recreation Area, an area popular for hiking and fishing.
The Discovery Center Trail is a network of several small trails equaling 14 miles total. These small trails are round trips from the Discover Center and back. The Lakeview Trail is 5.8 miles total. You will follow the Oak View Trail to reach it, and go near Mill Lake. For a longer hike, keep following until you reach the Hickory Hills Trail, which is 8.5 miles.
Big Portage Lake has a public beach, open from 8am to 8pm. There are picnic tables, grills, bathrooms and changing areas available. This is a good spot to go swimming, or fish for bass, pan fish and pike. Alcohol is prohibited at Big Portage Lake from April 1 through Labor Day.
Between September 15 and March 31, the area is open to hunting for deer and wild turkey.
In the winter, hiking trails can be used for cross country skiing and snowmobiling. The trails can also be used for equestrian activities.
Directions: Take I-94 Business N/E Huron St. for 2.4 miles. Merge onto I-94 West toward Jackson, stay for 16 miles. Take Exit 156 for Kalmbach Rd, turn right. Make a slight right onto Glazier Rd. After one mile, turn right onto Ridge Rd. Turn left onto McClure Rd, the park will be on the right.
