After the news of the expected signing of quarterback Vince Young by the Philadelphia Eagles, Michael Vick told media on Friday what VY could learn from him.
Ignoring nasty words from fans was one area that Young could benefit from hearing about. No one could say anything worse to Young than was said about and directly to Vick after his return to the NFL two years ago.
Development of QB skills that complement an ability to change plays with a player’s legs is another topic on which Vick could opine.
Finally, what the sports world calls “character issues” will have to be addressed, that for Young seem to center on learning about hard work and putting the team first when personal feelings are bruised.
Vick looks forward to getting to work with Young, particularly on the team concept. He wants to get him caught up not only on the playbook, but his skills. And then there are his plans for evening film study.
From a post today on CSNPhilly.com “As a group, we all have to help him get caught up. It’s not easy but at the same time, you put the work in, you try to understand what’s going on, and you just work as hard as you can. Film room is going to be important, studying at night is going to be important. He’ll get there.”
When learning a foreign language, immersion technique can be the most helpful. You are forced to speak the new language and only the new language while getting instruction in, you guessed it, the new language.
Welcome to NFL quarterbacking, team leadership and skill development immersion classes, Vince Young.
It’s how Vick learned and he had the detriment of having been out of the league for two years. He had to get into football shape, and learn about the foreign concept of the pocket.
He had to accept that the way he went about his business in the pre-prison days was a thing of the past. Will Young be receptive? Who knows but he will have a better mentor than Vick did.
While Donovan McNabb reportedly welcomed him, he always seemed annoyed on the sidelines in season one with Vick, when he was pulled to give his back up a couple of reps behind center.
A quarterback incubator is what seems to be growing in Philadelphia. Will it make Vince Young into the next Michael Vick? Maybe not, but if it does, all troubled divas at the QB position should be sent for immersion classes with the Eagles from now on.
