CHARLOTTE, NC – In an email on Friday, Verizon Wireless Carolinas regional spokesperson Karen Schulz stopped short of confirming a September launch date for the Motorola Droid Bionic and the iPhone 5 expected from Apple. Both phones have long been rumored to arrive this fall. Evidence has pointed toward September for the Apple device, and a statement this week from Motorola’s CEO clearly put the Bionic in the same month.
In the email, Ms Schulz said, “At this point, we have not announced (internally or externally) any release date for the Bionic or the iPhone 5.” The email also said that Verizon “will continue to introduce multiple devices on multiple operating systems to meet the varying preferences and demands of our customer base,” indicating a possible belief that the two opposing handsets are not quite as competitive in nature as some believe.
Though Verizon can’t choose to release the phone any earlier than the September date given by Motorola, they could choose the exact day so that it does not coincide with the iPhone. Either way, only time will tell just how competitive the two devices really are. Regardless of which device consumers choose, however, they will still be buying a Verizon service contract and that is the plus Big Red is banking on.
