Glendale’s own, Vanes Martirosyan has been waiting for a title shot for a very long time. Former US Olympian stopped Mexican veteran, Saul Roman two months ago at a Staples Center in Los Angeles in a WBC light middleweight title eliminator. Twenty five year old unbeaten contender would love to fight the current WBC champion, Canelo Alvarez. “It doesn’t matter if I have to go get Canelo in Mexico, I’ll get him,” said Martirosyan when I interviewed him yesterday at Chumash Casino:” I’ll fight Canelo in his house. I’ll fight him in his living room or his back yard. It doesn’t really matter. That’s how confident I am about fighting Canelo.”
Unfortunately Alvarez opted to face unranked Alfonso Gomez on September 17th and WBC ordered another title eliminator between Vanes Martirosyan and Mexican slugger, Alfredo Angulo. It just seems like WBC makes or changes the rules as they go along. When I asked Vanes what he thought about it, he said smiling:” The other day I was going to bed and I was sleeping and I was like I wonder if WBC was going to come up with a new title called the seven carat, 14 carat and then 24 carat gold belt, because they are doing whatever they can to protect Canelo and I don’t blame them.”
No matter what we think of WBC, the elimination bout between Alfredo Angulo and Vanes Martirosyan would actually be an intriguing match up between a boxer and a puncher and would generate interest.“I think Angulo and me would be a good fight,” confirmed Martirosyan: “I would love to fight Angulo with circumstances being in the right place at the right time. It doesn’t need to be for a title, because everybody knows that Canelo doesn’t deserve that belt and any of the top guys at 154 will take him. Angulo is a good fight and Gary Shaw, he is a promoter. He has to do his job. He is looking out for his fighter and if I was his promoter I wouldn’t want him to fight me.”
Actually, according to a recent interview on a Boxing Lab, Alfredo Angulo claimed that his promoter Gary Shaw has not given him any fight in over a year. However according to Shaw he has not been able to reach his star fighter in over a year, since Angulo had to move to Mexicali due to unresolved immigration issues.
Martirosyan has been clamoring for a fight with a heavy handed Angulo for the past three years. “It’s the same thing as Lara fighting Williams. I wanted Williams and then Lara showed what Williams had,” said Martirosyan when I asked if he saw any flaws in his mandatory:” The same thing is going to be with Angulo. I am just going to teach him a good boxing lesson. We don’t have to go to Mexico or Armenia. We can do it in Canada; neutral. That one will be good.”
Alfredo El Perro Angulo, who was not available for comments, is scheduled to return to the ring on August 20th at his hometown in Mexicali under his own promotional banner. May be Vanes and Alfredo could face each other afterwards. That would be a fight fans would love to see.
