Another somber reminder of the importance of marine safety came Friday, when a 15-year-old boy was killed during an outing at Lake Powell after the boat he was riding in crashed into a rock. The boy has not yet been identified publicly, but it is known that he was a boy scout and was with other scouts as well as some adults when the accident occurred.
The boy had been heading back in to camp for the night, when the boat struck the rock, ejecting him. He was overcome by his injuries. Others were hurt in the crash, and were removed from the scene for medical treatment.
This tragedy comes on the tail of a slew of water-related fatalities involving children in Utah this year. As for how this particular accident might have been prevented, safety experts say that people should refrain from operating boats after dark.
