Hello Happy Valley!
Have you ever seen Mystery Science Theater 3000? You know, that thing where they watch old, terrible movies and make fun of them? No, I’m not talking about thursday nights in your old college dormroom. These were professionals.
Well, that show isn’t around anymore, but we have the next best thing. Some of the creative geniuses behind that show have, for the last several years, given us RiffTrax! Just head out to rifftrax.com and you can select from a large selection of MP3s, each for a different movie. Just follow the directions to sync it up to the movie of your choice and voila! (I think that’s French for “Now you’ve got people poking fun at your movie!”)
You can watch stuff like Avatar, The Dark Knight, Twilight, X-Men, and many more.
Well, in about three weeks, on August 17th, you’ll have the chance to see them do that very same thing live!
That’s right. It’s a live riffing.
I’ve been to several of their previous performances and they get pretty funny. I saw them tear Plan 9 from Outer Space a new one as well as other things like Reefer Madness. In August, they’ll be watching and riffing the 1962 movie Jack the Giant Killer and you’ll have the chance to see it at either the University Mall or Provo Towne Centre.
You see, what they do is broadcast the event live to select Cinemark theaters around the country. There are several theaters in the Salt Lake area that will be carrying it, but in the Provo/Orem area, it’s University Mall and the Towne Centre.
Now, this isn’t a review. As I said, it’s going to be a live event, so I haven’t seen it yet. But I can tell you, from previous experience, that it’s worth the time and money. They will likely put this one on DVD eventually, as they have all their previous live riffings, but you have simply got to see this one in the theater.
There’s something to be said for the large groups. There are jokes that will always be funny. But when you’re in the middle of a large crowd that is all laughing at the same things, there’s a synergy. The energy is just fun.
Now, be warned. The jokes do, at times, get a little bit racy. Not too bad, but if you haven’t seen one of their previous RiffTrax, I’ll tell you that they do make a few off color jokes from time to time. It’s not usually that much, but it’s something to know going in.
Personally, I plan to be there and reviewing it afterwards. Probably the University Mall. I haven’t bought my tickets yet.
But you can. Just go to rifftrax.com and there on the right of the screen they have an ad and a link where you can order your tickets.
It’s great fun for a date. I’m just saying.
