With TV shows such as My Super Sweet 16, Say Yes To The Dress, My Fair Wedding and many more, formal events are becoming more and more extravagant. While most events are held in recreational halls or hotel ballrooms, there are some unique locations for formal events that many people do not even realize exist.
In Sandy Spring on Norwood Road sits the beautiful and historic Woodlawn Manor. Built in the 1800s by the Thomas family, the manor originally was the site of a Quaker boarding school. Also on the grounds of the manor is a barn, built in 1832 which, local legend tells was a stop on the famous Underground Railroad. While advertised as an historic museum, Woodlawn also offers rooms for special or formal events that are on the smaller side. Many of the workers do dress in period costume, and the rooms are furnished with period items. Having been built in the 1800s, the manor is small, and so indoor events are usually kept around 60 or fewer guests. The most popular indoor events the manor hosts are tea parties. These are great for young children with American Girl dolls or a group of friends who simply want to have a good time. While indoor events must be kept small, the manor lies atop many acres of land, and so larger events can be held outside under a tent, which the manor provides. Hosting an event in an historical area is a wonderfully unique way to combine elegance and an almost surreal feeling of fantasy.
Another unique event location is the Ceresville Mansion. While it is located farther away, in Frederick, MD, the mansion is another historic and extremely beautiful location for any formal event. The original Ceresville Mansion was built around the 1780s. It was home to the owner of the Ceresville flour mill, which once lay on the same plot of land. In 1816, the ownership of the mill changed. The current mansion was built in 1888 by Edward Shriner as a wedding anniversary gift to his wife. While Ceresville is also a very old building, its ballroom can hold as many as 200 people. Having double parlors, a ballroom with high ceilings, and an outdoor terrace with a pergola and reflecting pool, Ceresville is truly a unique even location. The rooms are decorated with period furniture and are very elegant. Though it is a far distance, Ceresville is a wonderful place to hold any formal occasion.
While many people feel that hotel ballrooms and recreational centers are the way to go with formal events, there are many unique locations that can serve as the backdrop for any party. They just have to be discovered.
