When one thinks of covered bridges, New England usually comes to mind but the truth is that Ohio ranks #2 in the amount of covered bridges still standing with its 150 bridges. Cleveland covered bridge fans or Clevelanders who enjoy a relaxing, weekend drive should consider a visit to Union County, Ohio and the city of Marysville on Saturday, September 10 where the 4th annual Covered Bridge Festival and Festfair are taking place.
Covered Bridge Festival A daylong celebration of the area covered bridges, visitors can take a self-guided tour or take a guided bus tour of four historic covered bridges, a steel truss bridge and two new covered bridges. The guided tours of all bridges except the new Thompson Road Bridge begin at 9 a.m. and run every 30 minutes. Adult tours are $8 and tickets for children 12 and under are $5. Because of its remote location, guided bus tours of the new Thompson Road Bridge are offered separately, every hour from noon – 3 p.m. Tickets for adults are $5 and children tickets are $3. Buses leave from the intersection of Court and Sixth Streets in Marysville.
Special Historical Note: Four of the five covered bridges in Union County were built in the late 1860’s and the 1870’s and are still as part of the county highway system.
Entertainment at the Festival includes the Black Diamond Bluegrass Band on Court St. from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. and a dulcimer concert on the Thompson Road Bridge from noon – 4 p.m.
