There are three basic questions that an individual seeking the new birth must ask:
- What does it mean to be born again?
- How do I receive the new birth?
- How do I know if I have been born again?
The new birth
Being born again means that a person has been birthed into the Kingdom of God by the Holy Spirit. A record of the new birth experiences of Yeshua and the Apostles are found in the Bible (Luke 3:22; Acts 2:1-4). It is most commanly called the “baptism of the Holy Spirit” because a person is completely immersed in the Spirit similar to being immersed in water.
The new birth is achieved through seeking a personal relationship with the Creator. As you seek Him, He will reveal Himself to you (James 4:8) in a uniquely personal way, and guide you into the new birth experience. This may require having hands laid on you and/or being prayed for by an anointed disciple. However, it is also possible that He may anoint you with His presence without the aid of another human being (Acts 10:44-48).
You will know that you have been anointed by the Holy spirit because you will become a new person (2 Corinthians 5:17). Any desires that you might have felt that violated the laws of the Creator will be taken away: lust, pride, anger, coveting, worry, etc. He will remove these fears and sinful desire from your heart and replace them with love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control (Galatians 5:22-23). These will not be works that you do in your own strength, but will be the power of the Holy Spirit working through you.
For he that is entered into his rest, he also hath ceased from his own works, as God did from his. – Hebrew 4:10
