Saturday, July 9 several Tulsa poets converged at Agora Coffeehouse to hone their performing skills. Sheila Black, Creative Writing professor from TCC and NSU emceed the event. Many of the poets are her former Creative Writing students.
Wayne Loucks, Catherine Sonnier, George Nelson, Evie Taylor, Jim Jordan, Courtney Spohn, Hugh Tribbey, Anthony Nissan and Deborah Hunter read various original works. Poem topics ranged from memories of divinity candy at Christmas to the sexiness of the electric guitar. Deborah Hunter wowed the audience with her rhythmic readings on jazz and the blues.
Sheila Black closed the reading by performing three of her own poems which featured elegant images from nature. One poem was titled “Fireflies.” Another poem she had written earlier in the day. Black’s work aptly demonstrated why she teaches writing in the first place – she is fluent in the art form.
