A Mississippi father was arrested early Saturday morning after he let his 8-year-old drive the car on I-12.
Louisiana troopers pulled over a green pickup truck that had apparently been driving erratically on the Interstate 12, where the boy was driving the speed limit of 70 m.p.h., reports wwltv.com. When officers arrived at the pickup truck, they found the 8-year-old boy sitting on the edge of the seat, so his feet could reach the accelerator and brake pedals. Officers also found the boy’s father, 28-year-old Billy Joe Madden, intoxicated in the front seat.
“Troopers determined that the driver was an eight-year-old with his four-year-old sister in the rear seat and their father, Billy Joe Madden, 28, of Hattiesburg, Miss., in the passenger seat,” said State Police spokeswoman Trooper Melissa Matey.
The family was travelling to Dallas, Texas from their hometown of Hattiesburg, Miss when they were pulled over just outside of Holden, Louisiana.
Troopers called Child Protective Services and they took the children until a responsible family member could arrive to take the children, reports Fox News.
As for Madden, the police report states that he was arrested and booked into the Livingston Parish Jail on two counts of child desertion, parent allowing a minor to drive, open container, and two counts of no child restraint and no seatbelt.
Madden’s bond is set at $1,474.00.
