As tough as colds are for kids, they can be even tougher for parents. After days and days of coughing, sneezing and late nights, they can quickly become irritable, grumpy and exhausted. The children don’t fare well either. While every parent wants to ease their child’s symptoms and help them feel better, a cold can be difficult to treat. Since the FDA pulled children’s over the counter cold medicines back in 2008 the general recommendation has been to let the cold run its’ course. While this advice is usually the best option it can be difficult for parents to just stand by, feeling helpless and frustrated.
While there are many homeopathic remedies that are safe for children, another solution has presented itself. Dr. Zak Zarbock, a pediatrician right here in South Jordan, has developed a cough syrup that is safe and effective for any child over the age of 12 months. The syrup, called Zarbee’s, is made out of honey, vitamin C and zinc, which has been shown to ease symptoms just as well, if not better, than dextromethorphan (the main ingredient in most over-the-counter cough syrups). These all natural ingredients make it safe for children of all ages to use, plus it has a yummy, sweet taste that will definitely take the war out of getting your kids to take their medicine. (Babies under 12 months should not take the syrup since it contains honey).
Not only can Salt Lake parents thank Dr. Zarbock for his magic elixir, but parents all across the country can as well. Walgreens, Harmon’s, Macey’s and Fresh Markets carries the product in all of their stores here in Utah, but there are many other stores nationwide that carry the product as well (I found it at a local Walgreens in Sandy for $8.49).
