Torchwood: Miracle Day on Starz has been getting great reviews, and even the ratings have been steady, yet according to the CEO on July 29th, chances are the renewal may not happen anytime soon.
According to ew.com at the TCA press junket, Starz CEO Chris Albrecht told EW “he doesn’t envision the cult favorite as an annual event. The show’s 10-episode order was a large and unusual commitment for Torchwood partner BBC, he pointed out, and he hinged the pickup more on whether creator Russell T Davies comes up with a great new idea that can work for both partners.”
So in other words, if Russell T. Davies does not have time to devote to Torchwood, then it won’t happen. It also sounds like Starz does not want to commit to this show, because reading what Albrect says, that he does not see the show as an annual event, makes me believe that they are bowing out.
Maybe it is because BBC can’t fund it or the show hinges on Davies coming up with more scripts, but the fans who are invested in this world know that there is a lot of story left in Torchwood. If nothing else, Starz should be jumping on this show as an annual event, because they sure did throw a lot of clout behind promoting the show from free screenings, getglue stickers to bringing them to Comic-Con.
While it would suck to wait for another installment of this show, whether it is a one story arc series or a more traditional 10 run series, people who like the show will wait. It is as simple as that.
