Torchwood: Miracle Day on Starz premiered on July 8th and started with a bang. In its fourth season, Russell T. Davies brings back some familiar faces paired with some new blood in the universe he created.
The day people stopped dying
Oswald Danes (Bill Pullman) is a convicted pedophile who is sentenced to death by lethal injection, yet he does not die.
Rex Matheson, while on the phone with Esther Drummond (Alexa Havins) discussing Torchwood, is impaled through the heart. He should have been dead, yet he is not.
These two are among thousands of people who are in a state of flux, people who should have been dead are still standing. And unlike a true immortal, none of these people are healing.
Meanwhile back in Wales
Gwen Cooper (Eve Myles) and Rhys (Kai Owen) are living in a very secluded spot in Wales, with their baby girl, and Gwen is still in a state of readiness for anything. They are in hiding after the events from season three. You see this when a couple knocks on their door. Both Gwen and Rhys go into action, arming themselves with guns and getting prepared for anything. All the while the baby is just smiling enjoying this. Gwen opens the door and sends the couple on their way.
Later on she receives a phone call from Andy (Tom Price) who is calling Gwen to inform her that her father is in the hospital. Though she knows that she will expose them, she has to see her father. What her and Rhys have not realized that is that people around the world have stopped dying, and though this is something that Gwen and Torchwood would have investigated, Rhys puts his foot down and tells her in no uncertain terms that she really can’t fight this fight. You can see that for Gwen she is still Torchwood, even with the physical site being destroyed.
Esther investigates further
Esther still reeling over the news of no more deaths, has a suspicion that Torchwood is involved somehow, especially as the word has been eradicated from the internet. This only piques her interest and she goes on the hunt for more info. She not only finds more info on Torchwood, but also Captain Jack Harkness who is there to finish cleaning up any files. Before they could have a chat, a man comes in, a bomb strapped to his body ready to blow Esther and Jack apart, when these two jump out the window to their safety.
Rex discovers something not quite right
Rex still in the hospital and trying to cope with the fact that he should be dead, but isn’t, links onto the hospital’s camera and sees that the man who tried to kill Jack is still alive, even though he is a charred mess he is still alive. There are a team of doctors including Dr. Juarez (Arlene Tur) (who has been treating Rex), and several government officials, and Jack Harkness who got into the room under pretense. They are all staring at the burnt man who is staring back at them in awareness, which freaks them out. Jack suggests cutting his head off, yet the man is still alive and aware.
This not only concerns Rex, but sets him on a journey to Wales to find out more about Torchwood and how this present situation can be remedied.
Jack, Gwen and Rex come together
Rex finds where Gwen and Rhys live and goes there to ask her what is really going on. While he is trying to get any information out of her, a helicopter comes up behind Rex and shoots a rocket inside the home. Gwen ticked off and with a baby in her arms, starts’ shooting at the helicopter but it moves away. This is when they all leave the home, and when Captain Jack shows up to save the day.
They escape that mess only to find that Rex called in police reinforcement while they were all trying to recoup from the fact that Jack is no longer immortal but mortal.
This first episode has many things going for it; the bad guy is truly despicable, people are no longer dying on a global scale which poses a very tricky problem, someone leaked Torchwood information to the CIA, and Gwen and Jack are back together again to investigate what is really going on.
There were also minute changes from the original series, such as the title sequence and the theme music. And Wales has not been forgotten. Chances are it never will be, because in this first episode the country was referenced several times, and it even was shown which made me feel a bit nostalgic for the old series.
For anyone coming into this show for the first time, Esther and Rex are both asking all the questions that new people are probably asking and this is something that should help as the series moves along. While you don’t need to see season 1-3 to get what is going on, it is something that should not be missed, especially if you want to see why this is such a popular series.
Rex so far is a colossal butt, and acting like the big and brash American, and you know what? It works, because those of us who have been with Torchwood from the beginning know that his attitude will change quickly enough, if the preview of the next episode is any indication.
The biggest reveals from the episode is that Jack is mortal and the fact that people, while still alive are not healing. Something tells me that whatever this is, well it is centered around Jack’s ability to live forever. Because if you think about it, everyone else is immortal but he isn’t? And the fact that the assassin who was strapped with the bomb seemed to know that Jack would die is another indicator that this was all for his benefit.
Though people can’t die, they also can’t heal or so it seems. They are all walking zombies if you think about it, just that they are all aware. The scene where the assassin is all burnt and spread out over the table had such a strong impact. The man is aware, and more than likely in excruciating pain, yet he is looking at everyone hearing what they are saying. And when his head is cut off, then you have to realize that it is possibly alien tech keeping people alive and aware, and that is a very cruel thing indeed.
One question I have in regards to this undying? What is going to happen to the people who should have died when this change occurred? When it is reversed will the Earth suddenly have a bunch of corpses to contend with? Or will people, like Rex, who were operated on, will they start to heal?
Oswald Danes character while introduced will undoubtedly be the face of all this undying, especially as he lived and was released from prison. This does not bold well, to say the least.
When Jack comes to save the day it was such an awesome moment. Not only that, Gwen is harder and yet very vulnerable in her present situation. She not only has a husband but a daughter, and this situation with people not dying is screaming Torchwood, yet she tries to leave it alone, but the situation apparently comes to find her.
Overall this first episode in, has many questions, yet with only a total of 10 episodes, those questions will be answered as the season progresses. The Miracle Day is actually a curse, and it will take the rest of the Torchwood team and the CIA to figure out how to stop it from continuing on.
Did you get your getglue sticker? It is pretty cool as it features Captain Jack Harkness. Check out the slide for what you should have in the series.
What did you think?
Torchwood: Miracle Day stars: John Barrowman, Eve Myles, Mekhi Phifer, and Bill Pullman. One day nobody dies, thus setting off a chain of events that pits the remaining Torchwood crew with America’s CIA to get to the bottom of this issue.
