If you have been watching ‘Torchwood’s Miracle Day’ on Starz (channel 260 in Phoenix) you know they are trapped in a world where no one (accept Captain Jack) can die… really. Planet Earth is full of immortal humans and death is something unattainable (unless you burn the body or have alien technology). The writers of ‘Torchwood’s Miracle Day’ make it painfully obvious that death is a necessary evil for the world to survive.
So far this season we have seen how the world’s resources have been over tasked, the medical community has had to change their ideals, and the government has re-created a caste system in which humans are categorized. You have category 0 – 3. Three is reserved for the healthy humans, two is the category for damaged but fixable humans, one is how the government classifies humans that ‘should be dead’ but thanks to the ‘Miracle’ are still alive. The newest category is zero, created to classify humans that are not fit to walk the earth because of their crimes.
Oswald Danes (made famous because he was the first human NOT to die in front of millions while he suffered from court ordered lethal injection) is one of the individuals the government is looking to classify a category zero. He received the death penalty for killing a little girl. People dispised him. But in the aftermath that was ‘the miracle’ he became a ‘Phicor’ (drug company) hero. The man is so dispicable you find yourself feeling sorry for him as he forges his way through this new world. This week he attacks his handler after the prostitute he requested told him about the new reclassification the government was looking to create for people like him. During the attack he got away with her laptop (what dirty little secrets will he learn from this? We will have to wait and see as the story continues to unfold).
Meanwhile, team Torchwood arrive at Angelo Colasantos’ home and learn some dirty little secrets about why the ‘blessing/miracle’ was brought about. The back story we learned last week as the love story between Angelo and Jack was revealed. A love story in which Angelo betrayed Jack when he learned he was immortal. But watching the man he loved die by the hand of multiple strangers over and over again was too much to handle and he eventually freed Jack from his chains. Jack said goodbye to Angelo and moved on with his life. But Angelo (despite getting married and becoming successful) never did. He searched the world over for an answer to immortality.
That is when he discovered the ‘Families’ (Ablemarch, Frines, and Casterdanes). Angelo’s granddauther Olivia revealed these secrets to team Torchwood. When Esther attempted to find any information on the three families she came up empty handed. Nothing existed in the CIA database for any one of the three names. Jack flashed back to the three men who made a deal to buy him all those years ago and concluded those men must be Ablemarch, Frines, and Casterdanes who viewers now know as the ‘families’.
CIA agent Freakin was uncovered this week as the inside man working for the ‘family’. Clever Rex had the contacts in his eyes when Freakin confessed all his sins. Agent Shapiro came in and rescued the group, deciding to put Olivia in a safe house and arresting Freakin (who blows up the vehicle with him and Olivia in, effectively reclassifying them both as category ones). Now their bodies would be delivered to one of the many compounds set up by the government designed to dispose of the category ones in giant incinerators. It was the government’s answer to over population (the bodies of the category ones would be burned… the only way a human could actually die thanks to the miracle).
Or so everyone thought. Jack took a few moments to say goodbye to Angelo (who was kept alive by machines). When he kissed him the machines went haywire. So Jack unplugged them (afterall, no one could die except him). But he didn’t count on the alien hardware Angelo had tucked away under the floor directly underneath his bed. Since the miracle happened no one had died unless they were burned until Angelo passed when unplugged from the machine. For a moment Jack was beside himself. But he, and his team quickly discovered the hidden technology.
Rex and Esther helped Jack escape with the masterplate that allowed Angelo to die in his pocket. But in the escape Esther was seen helping Jack and Jack was shot. We see Jack lying dead in the back seat of the SUV Esther was driving. But if the alien technology can reverse the miracle for Angelo and allow him to die it probably reversed the mortality of Jack back to immortality. We won’t know until next week.
What we do know is Rex stayed on to help the CIA. The CIA seems to be full of ‘family’ agents as one more was revealed. Gwen was on a plane being deported and she saw Jack’s death with the help of the contacts. Danes appears to be on the run again and Jillian Kissinger was offered a position with the ‘families’.
