Practicing proper sun protection can prevent the harmful and aging effects of UVA and UVB rays; this may explain why an increasing number of people are buying Tilley hats. Hundreds of dermatologists recommend Tilley hats as a key form of sun protection every year.
All Tilley hats are certified to block 98% of harmful UVA/UVB radiation, and deliver an Ultraviolet Protection Factor (UPF) of 50+, the maximum rating given.
Sun protective clothing is any garment that can provide adequate protection from the sun. Generally speaking, a hat must cover and shade the wearer and have a UPF fabric value of 15 to 50+, meaning that it blocks 93-98% of UV radiation.
All of Tilley fabrics – from hats to apparel – have been tested independently to determine how much sun protection they provide.
Tilley fabrics are tested by the International UV Testing Laboratories in Auburn, Alabama. These tests were done on a machine called a Labsphere UV 1000F Ultraviolet Transmittance Analyzer. All fabrics are tested against international standards developed by ASTM Committee D-13.65 and the American Association for Textile Chemists and Colorists (AATCC) for UV testing and labeling of sun protective clothing and shade devices.
UPF and SPF?
UPF stands for Ultraviolet Protection Factor. It is the amount of ultraviolet radiation that a fabric blocks. Compare this with SPF, which stands for Sun Protection Factor. An SPF rating only applies to lotions applied directly to the skin, not fabrics.
Fashion and Function
Tilley hats incorporate other desirable factors such as breathability and moisture management. As always, Tilley hats combine style with serious durability and performance.
All Tilley hats are guaranteed for life against wearing out; come with a 2-year, all-perils insurance policy against loss; float and tie on in gusty winds. Many styles incorporate mesh into the crowns allowing coolness and comfort during hot days or strenuous outdoor activities. All Tilley hat styles have been certified as “Excellent UV Protection” (UPF 50+) – blocking 98% of harmful UV rays. Proudly made in Canada (Toronto) where we can keep a watchful eye!
Full disclosure – the Raffia hat is made from a Palm Leaf and is durable but not “lifetime guarantee” durable. Palm Leaves are not known for their buoyancy.
In addition to wearing a hat and apparel that offer sun protection, people should also use a sunscreen with an SPF rating of 15 or higher and UVA/UVB protective sunglasses.
