Working your way out of the lower class is no easy feat for this working girl in this week’s free movie pick for Chicago’s Comcast On Demand subscribers. In 1988’s Working Girl, Melanie Griffith, (Crazy in Alabama), stars as Tess McGill, a secretary struggling to move up the corporate ladder. Working in the financial industry, and constantly receiving undesirable sexual advancements opposed to desirable advancement opportunities, Tess thinks she’s hit the jackpot when she meets her new boss, a woman named Katharine Parker, (Sigourney Weaver, Alien).
Katharine, who’s professionally achieved everything Tess longs for, tells Tess she’ll help her, but when Tess learns that Katharine has stolen her big, multi-million dollar corporate expansion idea, Tess decides that Katharine’s help should be limited to her one repeated piece of advice that if you want to get something in this world you have to make it happen. With Katharine bed-ridden from a ski accident, Tess then seizes the opportunity to reclaim her idea and pretends to have Katharine’s job in order to make her dream of brokering a big corporate deal a reality.
Enlisting the help of an unsuspecting, (and gaga over her), top-notch investment broker named Jack Trainer, (Harrison Ford, Star Wars), Tess works to convince not only those around her, but herself, that she’s capable of getting big deals done. However, when Katharine is no longer bed-ridden the question of whether she really is the woman for the job hangs in the balance.
With a tagline that reads: “For anyone who’s ever won. For anyone who’s ever lost. And for anyone who’s still in there trying,” Working Girl delicately explores the struggles one endures when pursuing one’s dreams against all odds. With its subtle humor, Working Girl is extremely well written, and contains one of the most likable protagonists ever to grace the screen. The obvious great care and attention given to every aspect of this film easily make it a must-see for any Comcast subscriber looking to check out a film that’s not only fun and engaging, but specifically designed for anyone who’s ever won, lost, or is still in there trying.
