Mysterious Package at SAFB causes three to be hospitalized.
By Steve Adams
All local TV stations are reporting an incident at SAFB that includes sulfur smelling package that has caused three to be hospitalized and seventeen others to be hospitalized. Just less than two weeks away from the tenth anniversary of the 9/11 attacks this scare hits way too close to home. The package was found this morning at the SAFB post office and Hazardous material experts were called in after three postal workers reported a rash and a sulphur like smell.
Although Bin Laden is dead this does bring back memories of all the anthrax and other scares that we heard about in the aftermath of the terrorist attacks. Officials that were questioned by all networks were reluctant to speak or give more information but several places on SAFB including the Post office have been closed till further notice.
Officials on SAFB Facebook page are reporting “Thanks to all for your vigilance and safe, rapid compliance with directions from emergency managers today. All affected personnel have been treated and released, and the affected area has been secured. Specialists are working to investigate the scene. Please remain clear of the area surrounding Base Post Office, and with that exception, please go about your normal activity”.
Whether or not this was a terrorist attack or just a package that was not sealed properly is unclear at this time. However, the death of Bin Laden and the tenth year anniversary of the 9/11 attacks does raise the possibility of terrorists attacking the United States or other installations around the world and suspicious activities should be reported to officials as a precautionary measure. Officials are currently refusing to give any more information to the TV stations till they can get their facts straight. However, it does seem that they have the situation under control and there is no cause to panic.
The grade school located outside the base on the Mascoutah side of the base has not started classes yet. They open next week. A few of the areas around the mail room including the Bowling Alley and the Education center have been closed down for the day only because of precautionary measures. If you are attending an event at SAFB today you may want to call first. If you are on Scott and receive mail that you think is suspicious please call the Law enforcement desk at 618-256-2223.
