For New York City parents who still don’t have an acceptable Kindergarten choice for their child come September 2011, there is another option on the horizon!
The NY Gifted Education Examiner has received word that there are limited spaces available in the inaugural kindergarten class of the new Teachers College Community School, temporarily located at 5th Avenue and 130th Street for one year while its building is being renovated. Next year TCCS moves to its permanent home at 168 Morningside Avenue at 126th Street. At full capacity, TCCS will include grades PreK-8, but, at the moment, it is a Kindergarten only.
Though admission is by lottery, this is not a charter school, but a DOE public school, spearheaded by Teachers College. Teachers at the TCCS will be employees of the New York City Department of Education, selected by the school leader, DOE representatives and the United Federation of Teachers Union, in consultation with Teachers College.
TCCS promises an innovative educational program designed by Teachers College, with outstanding academics and enrichment in arts, science, technology and wellness. The school is intended to demonstrate how affiliation with a higher education institution can lead to effective implementation of comprehensive educational services in an urban, community public school.

The educational program is being designed to develop each student’s knowledge and skills, love of learning and individual strengths as the foundation for academic and life success. A focus on global awareness celebrates the diversity of the community and prepares students for the social demands of the 21st century. The school’s vision also integrates delivery of services for children and families that help students optimize educational opportunities. Supplementary educational services including early childhood programming, family literacy, after school programming, as well as social and health services are provided. With the support of Teachers College the school will serve as a hub for curriculum development, educational research and evaluation related to key questions in teaching and learning. The school is being planned as an active professional development site for pre-service and experienced educators and a center for community educational programming.
NYC’s Teacher’s College is one of the nation’s foremost institutions developing, advocating and implementing progressive education, and a majority of NYC’s current public school teachers were trained to utilize their methods in the classroom.

John Dewey (1859-1952), a professor at the University of Chicago (1894–1904) and from 1904 to 1930 at Teachers College, of Columbia University in New York City… was a leading proponent of “Progressive Education” and wrote many books and articles to promote the central role of democracy in education. He saw schools not only as a place to gain content knowledge, but also as a place to learn how to live. The purpose of education was not so much the acquisition of a predetermined set of skills, but rather the realization of the student’s full potential and the ability to use those skills for the greater good. Dewey notes that, “to prepare him for the future life means to give him command of himself; it means so to train him that he will have the full and ready use of all his capacities.” Dewey insisted that education and schooling are instrumental in creating social change and reform.
