The mentor categories for each of the “The X Factor” U.K. judges in 2011 have been revealed in an article published by British tabloid The Sun. Each of the judges has a category of contestants to mentor by advising them on vocal style, what songs to perform, stage presence and image.
Here are the judges’ mentor categories for 2011:
Gary Barlow: male solo singers under age 25
Kelly Rowland: female solo singers under age 25
Louis Walsh: solo singers ages 25 and older
Tulisa Contostavlos: vocal groups
“The X Factor” U.K. has yet to to make an official announcement about which mentor categories the judges will have in 2011, and which celebrities will join the judges as guest mentors/advisors in the “judges’ homes” part of the competition to help decide which contestants will be finalists.
As previously reported, the rumored guest mentors for the judges are:
Gary Barlow: Robbie Williams at Willams’ home in Los Angeles
Kelly Rowland: Beyoncé or Usher at Rowland’s home in Miami
Tulisa Contostavlos: Tinie Tempah in Athens, Greece
Louis Walsh: Sinitta in Barcelona, Spain
Meanwhile, The Sun reports that “The X Factor” U.K. 2011 contestant Derry Mensah has been prevented from entering the United States because he is a convicted criminal. Mensah (who is 20 years old) has been open about disclosing his prison record for robbery (he served about nine months for the crime), and he says that his criminal past is behind him.
Mensah got a lot of media attention for his “X Factor” audition, which was televised on August 27, 2011. During his audition, he shamelessly flirted with Rowland by telling her that he loved her and the she was his ideal woman. Rowland then asked Mensah to give her a kiss.
According to The Sun, Mensah had been hoping to be mentored by Rowland, but that was not going to happen in 2011, since she is mentoring solo female singers under age 25. The Sun reports that Rowland convinced Mensah to switch from being a solo singer to joining a vocal group, which would bypass the visa problem of Mensah being unable to go to Barlow’s “judges’ home” in Los Angeles for Barlow’s mentor category of male solo singers under age 25. Now that Mensah is reportedly part of a singing group, he will be mentored by Contostavlos.
