In the fourth installment of the Top 10 Winningest Programs, the attention is on Class 4A.
A Disclaimer, this list as well as all of the Winningest Lists to follow are based on the best win-loss records and winning percentage in the decade.
So Who’s No. 1 in 4A? Only three teams enjoyed winning over 100 games for the decade so enjoy and debate amongst yourselves.
Next week Class 5A will be profiled.
10. Jackson South Side Hawks
Record During Decade- 79-47, 62.6% Winning Percentage
2010 Record- 3-7, missed the playoffs
Undefeated Regular Seasons- 1 (2006)
10 Win Seasons- 2 (2000, 2006)
Number of Playoff Appearances- 10 (2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009)
State Championships This Decade- None
State Championship Game Appearances- None
Analysis- The Hawks have made 10 playoff appearances in the decade with the only year the missed was last season when they went 3-7 and the losing season cost coach Carey Craig his job. Jerry Hayes is the new head man so here’s hoping that Hayes turns the Hawks fortunes around.
9. Dyersburg Troians
Record During Decade- 82-45, 64.5%
2010 Record- 3-7, missed the playoffs
Undefeated Regular Seasons- 1 (2005)
10 Win Seasons- 4 (2005, 2006, 2007, 2008)
Number of Playoff Appearances- 10 (2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009)
State Championships This Decade- None
State Championship Game Appearances- None
Analysis- Dyersburg has had two straight losing seasons after having four consecutive 10 plus win seasons as they missed the playoffs last season. The Trojans are a proud program that should get back on track in 2011.
8. Mitchell Tigers
Record During Decade-86-48, 64.2%
2010 Record- 6-5, lost in 1st round of Class 5A playoffs
Undefeated Regular Seasons- None
10 Win Seasons- 3 (2002, 2007, 2009)
Number of Playoff Appearances- 9 (2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010)
State Championships This Decade- None
State Championship Game Appearances- None
Analysis- The Tigers made the playoffs the two years they were in Class 5A and now drop down to 4A. Mitchell was the 3A runner-up in 2008 and should really compete in 4A this season.
7. Covington Chargers
Record During Decade- 90-46, 66.1%
2010 Record- 5-6, lost in 1st round of playoffs
Undefeated Regular Seasons– 2 (2001, 2002)
10 Win Seasons- 6 (2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2005, 2006)
Number of Playoff Appearances- 8 (2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2010)
State Championships This Decade- None
State Championship Game Appearances- None
Analysis- The good news for Covington in 2010 was they made the playoffs for the first time in three seasons, the bad news was the first round loss gave them a losing record for the fourth straight season. The Chargers had six of seven seasons with 10 plus wins to start the decade.
6. Red Bank Lions
Record During Decade- 93-40, 69.9%, (2000 5A state champion)
2010 Record- 7-5, lost in 2nd round
Undefeated Regular Seasons- 4 (2000, 2006, 2007, 2009)
10 Win Seasons- 5 (2000, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2009)
Number of Playoff Appearances- 9 (2000, 2001, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010)
State Championships This Decade- 1 (2000 5A title)
State Championship Game Appearances- 1 (2000)
Analysis- The Lions roared to start the decade right as they defeated Riverdale in the snow for the Class 5A title in 2000. Then two of next three seasons saw losing seasons and Red Bank didn’t make the playoffs. But in 2005 they started a streak of three straight ten plus win seasons to right the ship.
5. White House Blue Devils
Record During Decade- 96-42, 69.5%
2010 Record- 7-6, lost in Quarterfinals
Undefeated Regular Seasons- 1 (2004)
10 Win Seasons- 3 (2001, 2004, 2008)
Number of Playoff Appearances- 11 (2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010)
State Championships This Decade- None
State Championship Game Appearances- None
Analysis- White House had two semifinal appearances in the decade as they were defeated by Melrose in the 4A semis in 2004 and lost in the 3A semis in 2008. Jeff Porter has built a year by year contender at the 4A level
4. Greeneville Greene Devils
Record During Decade- 97-43, (2010 4A state champion)
2010 Record- 15-0, won 4A state title
Undefeated Regular Seasons- 1 (2010)
10 Win Seasons- 5 (2002, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010)
Number of Playoff Appearances- 9 (2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010)
State Championships This Decade- 1 (4A title in 2010)
State Championship Game Appearances- 2 (2009, 2010)
Analysis- The Greene Devils won the 4A title last season after finishing runner up in 2009. Since Caine Ballard took over the program in 2008, the Greene Devils have won 37 games and have made a semifinal appearance and have made it to the 4A title game in back-to-back seasons.
3. Crockett County Cavaliers
Record During Decade-105-30, 77.8%
2010 Record- 7-4, lost in 1st round,
Undefeated Regular Seasons- 3 (2002, 2003, 2006)
10 Win Seasons- 6 (2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2006, 2009)
Number of Playoff Appearances- 10 (2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2008, 2009, 2010)
State Championships This Decade– None
State Championship Game Appearances- 1 (2001)
Analysis- The Cavaliers started the decade off in 2001 by going to the 3A state finals were they beaten by Austin East. Crockett County had four years from 2000 to 2003 where they won 10 more games and in 2002, 2003 and 2006 they had unbeaten regular season. After the 2010, longtime coach P.A. Pratt steeped down to get into administration and the Cavaliers hired Kevin Ward away from Camden.
2. Knoxville Fulton Falcons
Record During Decade-108-37, 74.4%
2010 Record- 7-5, lost in 2nd round of playoffs
Undefeated Regular Seasons- 1 (2002)
10 Win Seasons- 5 (2002, 2003, 2004, 2006, 2007)
Number of Playoff Appearances- 10 (2000, 2001, 2002,2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2009, 2010)
State Championships This Decade– (3 3A state titles, 2003, 2004, 2006)
State Championship Game Appearances- 5 (2002, 2003, 2004, 2006, 2007)
Analysis- The Falcons were very dominant in Class 3A as they won three titles in 2003, 2004 and 2006 which made them the team with the most state titles in the decade.
Fulton has made trips to the Finals in 2002 and 2007 as well.
1. David Lipscomb Mustangs
Record During Decade-128-25, 83.6% ( 2 state titles, 2003 in 2A, 2007 in 3A)
2010 Record- 9-4, lost in Quarterfinals
Undefeated Regular Seasons- 2 (2003, 2008)
10 Win Seasons- 8 (2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008)
Number of Playoff Appearances- 11 (2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010)
State Championships This Decade– 2 (2003 in 2A, 2007 in 3A)
State Championship Game Appearances– 5 (2002, 2003, 2005, 2006, 2007)
Analysis- How Dominant were the Mustangs in the decade of the 2000s? Consider this they made five state title appearances in a six year span (2002, 2003, 2005, 2006 and 2007) and won two of them 2003 in 2A and 2007 in 3A. During that six year span the Mustangs posted a record of 79-10 between Class 2A and Class 3A.
