The ‘Great State of Georgia’ starring Raven Symone, Loretta Devine, and Marjandra Delfino premiered on ABC Family Wednesday night. The show is about two college kids (Symone and Delfino) who move to New York to follow their dreams. Delfino’s character wants to be a scientist and Symone’s character a performer. The season premiere faired well in the ratings but did not compare to some of the other ABC Family (channel 39 in Phoenix) premieres this summer (click here for rating details).
The show has a lot of the same comedic timing as ‘That’s So Raven’ from Disney, but the underlying subplots make the comedy a little darker and more intriguing than Disney’s hit. In the premiere, Georgia (who is played by Symone) auditions for a Broadway show in New York City. She has the voice but not the figure. The casting director abruptly points this out as he refuses to let her read for the part, despite her amazing singing talent. His rudeness does not get the better of Georgia who faces him head on and makes sure he knows his degrading comments don’t affect her (even though she has a moment later in the show where it does). She and Delfino leave his office, but she comes back… this time to seduce him with food.
The scene that follows is perhaps one many actresses wish they had the luxury of acting out in real life as she makes him desire her through food. Jo (played by Delfino) locates her best friend just in time to intercept the casting director’s angry girlfriend. Jo saves the day and Georgia gets her call back (in which we were left hanging).
The relationship between Symone and Delfino’s characters is the primary meat and potatos of the show. They play off each other very well. If the show can pick up in the ratings and grab the audience’s attention it will be a keeper. This is one I will watch again, but if the comedy gets too zany I may just stop. I look forward to catching next week’s episode. What were your thoughts on the show? Are you a fan, on the fence, or not enthusiastic about this new show?
