Two pirate wenches, Brandy and Sherry, work a booze cruise on a glass bottom boat. The party goers are celebrating the birthday of “some dude named Hemingway.” Brandy grabs her tray of shots and makes her way out into the crowd. She accidently bumps into one of the passengers and is knocked up against the guard rail. Looking down she screams as she sees the body of a man looking up at her from under the glass bottom of the boat. His eyes are closed and there is a bullet in his forehead.
Carlos and Jim take in the scene. The victim is a Hemingway look alike though Jim thinks he looks like Colonel Sanders. He has a gunshot wound to the head and post mortem fractures. Callie arrives and Jim is mooning over her. He tells her that she looks really nice today, not that she doesn’t look really nice every day. She makes her way over to do Gun Shot Residue testing on all the passengers, the captain, and the pirate wenches. Jim goes over to question the waitresses and they tell him that all the passengers look like the victim; they are all dressed like Hemingway.
Jim talks to Captain Frank Ford, who asks him when he will be done with his boat because he has charters booked all week. The victim, Gordon Adams, wasn’t even on the boat. Callie approaches and tells Jim that all the Hemingways were clear along with the captain and the wenches. None of them had fired a gun recently. Jim notices a picture in the paper that Callie is holding. It’s of the victim holding up a trophy kissing a woman. The caption reads that Gordon, the new arm wrestling champ, kisses his new bride Shelby.
Jim and Callie pay Shelby a visit at her bait shop. Callie informs her that Gordon is dead and she seems a little detached as she thanks Callie for letting her know. She tells them that she had just filed for divorce. She refuses to let them test for Gun Shot Residue without a warrant. Callie gives Jim a ride back to the station to meet up with Carlos.
Carlos informs Jim that Gordon was killed around 10pm. His pocket watch stopped when he hit the water. The guy was a big drinker and his liver was already hurting. Carlos estimates 13-14 drinks a day every day. The alcohol found in his system was much higher proof than normal alcohol. Like ethanol gas in his system.
At the hospital Callie overhears two co-workers talking. They tell her that Dr. Ben Avery is back.
Daniel and Jim watch Captain Frank from Jim’s car. Jim hands Daniel a $20 and tells him to go ask Frank for a can of premium to go. Daniel does as he is told and Frank walks away and returns shortly carrying a small gas can. Jim pulls up and approaches the two men. He tells Frank that Gordon was arrested for assaulting someone and that someone was you. Jim wants to know what the trouble was over. He accuses Frank of being a moonshine bootlegger. He asks Frank what is in the tank. Either ethanol gas or moonshine. As Jim goes to take a sip Daniel warns him that it’s probably not a good idea. By law ethanol has to be denatured or laced with poison to stop people from drinking it. Jim retorts that it didn’t stop Frank from serving it to Gordon. Jim takes a swig from the can which was probably no the smartest idea. He places Frank under arrest for suspicion of murder.
At the station Jim questions Frank. Frank tells him that he and Gordon were friends and that the moonshine he drank was 100% legal. He gets it from a distributor. Frank gives Jim the name of Andrew Bailey.
Jim visits Andrew at his bar. He orders a drink and identifies himself. Andrew tells Jim that everything he is selling is legal. He is a licensed distiller of Rottweiler whiskey it just sells better if people think it’s illegal. Andrew tells Jim that the person he should be talking to is Gordon’s crazy wife. She sells moonshine out of an illegal nip shop in the back of her business.
Callie runs into Ben at the elevator. He tells her that he would love to get together with her and catch up. She says that would be fine and as the doors are closing he says oh and he heard she got divorced.
Shelby is sitting on her dock seemingly drinking away her sorrow. She sees Jim approaching and orders him off her property. She tells Jim that she blames herself for his death. She is not upset, she is angry.
Jim arrives at Callie’s house and finds Jeff who tells him that Callie isn’t home she went out for a run. He tries to talk to Jeff about the divorce but Jeff just wishes everyone would stop asking him. Andrew call Jim in a panic and tells him that Shelby is at his place and she is going crazy.
Shelby is lights a bottle filled with moonshine and throws it against the sign for Andrew’s bar. It lights up and Jim grabs a hose to try and put the fire out while Andrew calls the fire department. Shelby just puts her head down on her knees. Shelby is taken away and Jim gives Daniel a second bottle to take to the lab as well as the cell number that Andrew called him from. He wants him to find out whatever he can.
Carlos and Jim check out Shelby’s place. It is definitely an illegal nip house. They pull up the rug and find a large blood stain.
Callie calls Jim from the hospital but gets his voicemail. Ben approaches her and asks if maybe they could grab dinner since she is not working. She asks him how Jennifer is and he tells her he is still not married to her.
Shelby posts bail and Carlos tells Jim that the blood they found at her place was not Gordon’s. IT turns out that Shelby’s maiden name is McKay and they are one of the biggest moonshine families in Florida. They have a secret recipe for what they call Lightning Queen and it is a huge seller. There was bad blood between the McKays’ and another family; the Fords’. As in Frank Ford.
Jim arrives at Frank’s boat. Franks I nowhere to be found and all the gas he had on board is gone. Carlos and Jim take to the woods to look for him. They locate Frank’s distiller and find blood on some leaves nearby. Gordon must have been shot here. Jim finds a shell casing. After a little more poking around they head back to the car. As they are sitting in the car talking another car peels out behind them. Jim intends to pursue which Carlos is not happy about. The two cars face off dodging each other at the last minute. Two cop cars make a road block forcing the car to stop. Jim orders Frank out of the car but when the door opens its Shelby that gets out. The door opens and Shelby gets out. Shelby used Frank’s moonshine to light up Andrew’s bar. Jim thinks Gordon must have given Frank Shelby’s secret family recipe. Knowing that Frank would mass produce and make near a million dollars selling it while Shelby would only sell to local customers. Gordon went behind Shelby’s back to mass produce.
Jim questions Shelby and she tells him that yes Gordon gave Frank the recipe. That doesn’t mean she killed Gordon. She loved him and he loved her. Jim is not sure he believes that. He leaves to go find Frank.
Daniel gives Jim the records for Andrew’s cell phone. It looks like Frank has been rum running the Lightening Queen using his boat. A subpoena also comes through for Gordon’s medical records.
Jim arrives at the hospital just as Ben is confirming his dinner with Callie for tonight. After Ben leaves Callie tells Jim that it is just a work thing. She gives him Gordon’s records which show four ER trips in his first year in Florida alone. He was asked to be part of a study that involved stopping drinking but he declined. A few weeks later he returned and asked if there was still room in the study. Callie believes it looks like Gordon stopped drinking for Shelby.
Jim tracks down Frank who is definitely not happy to see him. Jim find containers of the Lightening Queen on Franks boat. He places Frank under arrest. He accuses him of getting Gordon to steal the recipe from Shelby. Frank admits to the rum running but swears he didn’t kill Gordon. At that moment Jim receives a text message and tells Frank that ok according to this text you didn’t but I think we both have an idea who did.
Jim pays Andrew a visit. He tells Andrew that he knows that he and Gordon went to Tulane together and that they were in the same fraternity. He called Gordon to come down and butter up Shelby. He just wasn’t planning on Gordon falling in love with Shelby. Gordon was refusing to go through with the plan so you shot him. Andrew tries to deny it but it’s no use.
Callie and Jim visit Shelby and tell her that Gordon really did love her and that he had been trying to get clean and give up the alcohol. She appreciates them letting her know. Jim asks Callie to stay and have a drink with him but she has to leave to go to her “work thing.” She walks away but rushes back a second later ad plants one on Jim. She tells him to call Daniel to get a ride home.
Callie and Jim visit Shelby and tell her that Gordon really did love her. Callie leaves to go on her work thing. She comes back and plants one on Jim. Call Daniel to get a ride home.
Callie meets Ben at the restaurant. He tells her that the only thing he misses about Palm Glade is her. He also tells her that the reason that he is there is because they are closing the hospital. For a lot of people that means finding a new job. For her it means a position at Atlanta Memorial Hospital as the Associate Director of Nursing and since it is a full teaching hospital the job will include a full ride for her to finish up her medical degree. Only thing is that it’s in Atlanta.
