When Rideau Recognition Solutions hosted a roundtable last week at the Union League of Chicago — they anticipated a fantastic response to the Keynote speakers.
Both Keynote speakers, S. Max Brown, Principal of Leadership Directives at Rideau’s own Recognition Management Institute and Roundtable guest, Doug Conant, former President & CEO of Campbell’s Soup and author of TouchPoints, received a tremendous response, challenging the room full of HR professionals to examine their own leadership styles. Both speakers encouraged the crowd to look for “small moments” in which to exercise positive leadership with employees and colleagues.
Later that afternoon, attendees eagerly participated in a biz school-style case study that examined the business impact of employee recognition in today’s economy. The case study examined a real life scenario in which quick company growth resulted in adverse employee behaviors and reactions that threatened the company’s continued success. Among the adverse behaviors being observed were safety issues on the factory floor, increased absenteeism, and inconsistent sales volumes.
In examining potential responses, the company considered everything from outsourcing to an internal reorganization but, in the end was attracted by the low cost, and positive employee responses to launching an employee recognition program with proven metrics and positive image with employees.
As Rideau Roundtable participants soon learned, employee recognition today is more than a gold watch on an anniversary or a framed certificate for a job well done. Recognition today focuses on targeting, managing and tracking cost-reduction and revenue-generating employee behaviors. Recognition provides everything from sales incentives to peer-to-peer kudos to tracking and rewarding outstanding customer service.
