According to an article titled “‘Rep. Allen West Calls on CBC to Condemn Carson‘s ’Hate-Filled Comments‘ or He’ll Quit Caucus’” on Glenn Beck’s news/commentary website, The Blaze: Congressman West, Florida Republican and former Army Lieutenant Colonel who recently returned from a trip to Israel, said he was considering dropping out of the Congressional Black Caucus. Congressman West is considering doing so as a result of unsubstantiated, not-yet-repudiated rhetoric by Democrat Congressman Andre Carson, a Muslim from Indiana, about what Carson perceives as the real, insidious goals of members of the Tea Party.
According to The Blaze: “The hateful rhetoric of Democratic Indiana Rep. Andre Carson, as first reported by The Blaze Tuesday, has gained some national traction. No-nonsense Republican Florida Rep. Allen West has called on the Congressional Black Caucus (CBC) to condemn Rep. Carson’s remarks made on August 22, including suggestions like ‘Some of them in Congress right now of this Tea Party movement would love to see you and me hanging on a tree.’”
Yesterday, The Blaze published an article titled: “‘This Is WAR’ — Congressional Black Caucus Travels US Cities Using Violent Rhetoric: Declares ‘War’ on Racist Tea Party, Says Tea Party Wants to Lynch Blacks, Calls for Bank Runs, Civil Unrest in Their Neighborhoods and Homes.”
Congressman West, in a letter sent earlier today to Congressional Black Caucus Chairman Emanuel Cleaver (of Missouri), wrote:
It has come to my attention, from the numerous statements made by my colleagues in the Congressional Congress over the last several weeks, that in order to cover for the failings of the Obama Administration and the economic problems that have led to unemployment of more than 15 percent in the Black community, the CBC strategy is to demonize the Tea Party.
It is unconscionable when a fellow CBC member, Congressman Andre Carson, comes to South Florida and claims that some in the Tea Party would love to see black Americans “hanging on a tree.” It is appalling to hear another CBC colleague, Congresswoman Maxine Waters, say “The Tea Party can go straight to hell.”
As Chairman of the CBC, I believe it is incumbent on you to both condemn these types of hate-filled comments, and to disassociate the Congressional Black Caucus from these types of remarks. Otherwise I will have to seriously reconsider my membership within the organization.
[The rest of Congressman West’s letter can be found here.]
Commenters to The Blaze were generally very supportive of Congressman West’s comments.
“Bete Noire” wrote: “Rep. West, you are an intelligent and honorable man. The greater distance you can put between yourself and the hate speech of the CBC the better. Resign from the CBC and be an example to all of us at this troubling time that race baiting is never acceptable and cannot be a political tool for either side.”
According to “Loubell”: “Run Allen, run away from that caucus as fast as you can. The sooner you do it the better! Allen West for president! (I wish)”
“Treaty” wrote: “All these cries of racism are just going to backfire on them. There was a lot of white guilt when they first started doing it – now I‘m sure it’s just BS to everyone that hears it. It’s a tactic for the weak.”
Nevertheless, one commenter was critical of another aspect of Lt. Col. West’s performance as a Congressman, such as “Joe1234,” who wrote “too bad he didn‘t have the guts to vote against boehner’s BS debt ceiling scheme..”
