According to a Penn State University study, oatmeal contains large amounts of extra-soluble fiber that help your intestines slow the release of sugar into the bloodstream. This prevents sugar spikes which can cause you to feel sleepy shortly after eating. The soluble fiber also reduces low density lipoproteins without lowering high density lipoproteins which is great for your circulation.
Oatmeal also contains a number of good nutrients like vitamin E, zinc, selenium, copper, iron, manganese and magnesium. All of these nutrients help your body in many ways and even keep you from getting sick during flu and cold season. For instance, Vitamin E is good for healthy skin while zinc is a great antioxidant. Magnesium is also very good because it helps the body absorb these nutrients more efficiently.
Though many people eat oatmeal as a hot cereal during the winter, it’s great for your digestion anytime of the year. The fiber is good for your bowels and helps lower your cholesterol. If you find that you can’t eat oatmeal as cereal, try eating oatmeal cookies or other snacks made of rolled oats. You can eat healthy and still enjoy a little taste of sugar.
