The Backwoods Angler was founded in 2000 by Blaine Mengel, Jr., a local guy who lives in Martins Creek, just north of Easton. He offers professionally guided smallmouth bass fishing trips on the Delaware River, Susquehanna River, Schuylkill River and the Lehigh River. In 1999, Blaine decided, to pursue his dream and fish for a living. He “retired” from the medical field and went fishing. Prior to 1999, Blaine had held a position in the medical profession for thirteen years. His passion for fishing has taken him across the US and Canada. He’s tangled with Peacock Bass in Hawaii, Northern Pike in Ontario and smallmouth bass in Maine, but the Delaware River and its feisty smallmouth bass are his specialty. Backwoods Angler operates 12 months per year and 7 days per week.
Along with guiding full-time, Blaine has an impressive resume. He is a freelance writer for The Reading Eagle Newspaper and New Jersey Angler Magazine. He has authored two books; The Delaware River Smallmouth Bass Fishing Handbook, Volumes 1 and 2, and contributes a weekly fishing report to the Allentown Morning Call Newspaper.
He was fishing editor for The Outdoor Adventurer for more than 3 years, and has been featured in Bassin’, Field & Stream and In-Fishermen magazines. He is sponsored by Pradco Lures, Mizmo Bait Company, Don’s Handcrafted Jigs, Shimano, Gamma Fishing Line and Case Plastics. He is also a member of the Delaware Valley Outdoors Pro Staff.
Blaine is also host of Backwoods Angler TV, an Outdoor/Fishing television program which premiered on VERSUS/NBC Sports on July 25, 2011. It is the only fishing program on VERSUS/NBC Sports focusing on the fisheries of the NE/Mid-Atlantic region. It can be seen Monday afternoons at 12:30 pm and continues through December 9, 2011. Service Electric Cable TV-2 in the Lehigh Valley also airs the show Sunday evenings at 8:30 pm. (The time may change on SECTV if other local sporting events are aired.)
His show is quite unique, much better than most fishing shows. He’s down to earth; easy to understand while offering some great tips not only on fishing but also on equipment and tackle. It’s really neat seeing him fish on local waters which look very familiar, like the Delaware River, the Schuylkill River, and the Susquehanna River or on Lake Hopatcong in New Jersey. Mengel’s partner since 2008, Chris Gorsuch of Walnutport, is also on the show and is particularly knowledgeable about the North Branch of the Susquehanna River. Backwoods Angler TV is produced by Chris Manley of Allentown. The music for the show is original composition work from Mengel, a bass player, and guitarist/keyboards player Eric Rasmussen of Bridgewater, NJ.
