Founder Packy Malley first started the Reggaefest in 1992 at the Meadow Ridge Farm in Huntsburg; about 700 people attended the one day event. Today the festival is a 3 day event that will feature around 20 bands, is being held at 12001 Ohio 282, Nelson Ledges Road, Garrettsville, Ohio and Malley expects thousands to show up. Since Ohio has been experience such a drastic heat wave, Malley has decided to rent out two air conditioned bathrooms trailers.
Malley doesn’t just have reggae in his blood, but also chocolate as well. Packy Malley is the grandson to the founder of Malleys Chocolate.“When making an ice cream sundae for a customer, Grampa Malley always told us to make it like we were making it for ourselves and reggaefest is the kind of festival I’d want to attend”, said Malley.
Reggaefest starts today August 12th, 2011 to Sunday August 14th, 2011; starting at noon until 11 p.m. Featured bands like Carlos Jones, P.L.U.S (Peace Love and Unity Syndicate), The Abyssinians, The Mighty diamonds, Bushman, Yellowman, Kenyetta, Marty Dread, Etana, The Meditations, Taj Weekas, The Flex Crew, Roots High Power Sand System, Rasta Rafiki and DJ Carlos Culture.
Adults are allowed to bring in their own beer, soft drinks, liquor or water as long as it is in a can or plastic container. All glass products will be confiscated by gate security.
“Many people do not understand that Packy has often (supported reggae music) without making any profits”, said Joe Pirtz; manager of Nelson Ledges Quarry Park.
Tickets for the festival are $95 (for Friday, Saturday and Sunday), $75 (for Saturday and Sunday) and $50 (for Sunday). All fees include camping, swimming, and live music for the entire weekend.
