Among the texture pack community there are a few legends. People whose work stands far above the rest and has stood the test of time. One such individual is Aageon. While I am not a fan of his most popular work, bumpmaft, there is another pack that I am rather fond of.
Drasavil has a deeply crafted elegance within each texture that makes any building in Minecraft shine. The subtle but ornate scroll work on the wool balances the more simple yet beautiful planks. Overall this is one of my favorite texture packs out there.
Me: What inspired you to make drasavil?
Aageon: Well it might not be the most conventional answer but to put it simply : my own mind and our entire universe. Our universe is a dark place with light glowing objects and I’m always intrigued by the design of everything that is around us. That’s how Drasavil came into existence.
Me: How much has your experience in the graphic arts helped you with Drasavil??
Aageon: The years of experience certainly helped me. You develop an eye for design and color management which helps a great deal in developing textures. The more you do it the faster and the better you get.
ME: You have mentioned before that you have created mods for other games. What are some of those games?
Aageon: There are a few years between my latest game mod and my Minecraft textures. Mainly because I had other priorities and Mod support wasn’t all to appreciated by Game Developers.
I have made/helped on mods for Medal OF Honor: AA, Quake 3, Quake 2, Doom 3, Unreal Tournament 2003/2004, Morrowind, Oblivion.
I’ve made 3D models, Maps, Textures,… for these games.
Me: What about your pack would you like to see improve?
Aageon: Well everything, I’m never satisfied of my work and always strive to deliver better content, but if I had to choose something it would be the brick texture. I was a bit lazy on that one.
Me: What kind of advice would you give to beginner texture pack artist?
Aageon: Read on the program you use to create your designs. Mastering the program is the first step in creating decent content.
When I started out at the age of 12/13, I didn’t have tutorials on the internet, so I read the whole help file and started to look at every option and tried to memorize it what to do.
My advice: Try to know your program, experiment with it and remember what you have learned.
