Bronx, NY – Yesterday, a dog was tethered to a fence, his owner nearby – a 4 yr-old child carrying a red balloon rushes to give the strange dog some love…
What do you think happened?
The dog bit the child.
The child’s mother, of course, went ballistic.
According to the NY Post, Nicki Fuller ran to her apartment to get a 2×4 to go after the tethered dog, but the dog’s owner successfully stopped her.
Though the writer of the NY Post story uses a lot of words like “vicious”, “lunged”, and “sudden attack” – the little girl only received 4 stitches.
Granted – four stitches in a child’s face are four too many, but there are so many wrongs in this story.
Where was little Ishay Steven’s mother when her 4 year old child sprinted across the street to a strange dog?
How far away was the dog, an English Bull Terrier named Fifty, from his owner?
Why wasn’t that owner watching closely enough to see the 4 yr-old child with a big red balloon running to his dog?
Animal control took Fifty and his owner in for some questions, but both were able to return home later that night.
Fifty was found to be up to date on his vaccinations and was current on his license.
Fifty’s owner let him down by not supervising him in a public place – the poor dog was lying quietly where he was tethered before the child – unknown to him – came running at his face.
His reaction wasn’t unusual or vicious. Many dogs would have reacted in exactly the same manner.
Another important reminder to dog owners – supervise your dog at all times.
And to parents – supervise your children at all times and please, remind (teach, implore, you name it) them not to approach a dog that they do not know – ever.
