Terra Nova on Fox has made the rounds during the TCA where those who write about TV asked many questions and where finally, the producers as well as the execs could answer some if not all.
One big thing is the family, emotional element being pushed over the sci-fi element.
According to TVline.com:
“It wasn’t so much [the result of] screenings and focus groups but our desire to engage you in the Shannon family story,” executive producer/writer Rene Echevarria told TVLine. “We didn’t think of it as expositional, but a more emotional approach to draw you into that world.”

This seems to be a big push on the part of the writers. The sci-fi element is what brought me and several others into the drama. While there is nothing wrong with this being a family drama, it definitely changes the outcome of the series. There are 13 episodes in which to show and tell in regards to the Shannon Family, and as I suspected, they will be used as a way for the audience to get involved with the show.
11th pilgrimage – do you have what it takes?
The push for emotional trials and tribulations seen through the eyes of a family doing everything in their power to stick together definitely has many possibilities, and this will also cut down on dinosaur time, as it seems it cost a bit too much to have one on screen every episode. But how will they marry the two, the family and sci-fi element together? Because that will make the series that much more emotional and invest me as a fan, even though I am one now.
The other interesting thing is why it took so long for this series to finally have an air date.
According to deadline.com:
Braga stressed that one reason the show has suffered some production growing pains and delays is that they’re essentially reinventing the wheel with Terra Nova in terms of the effects technology they’re instituting. “It simply wasn’t possible to do this show until now,” he said. “We’re literally creating (new) things as we go along. Added Echevarria: “A lot of production houses we approached said, sorry, it can’t be done, not on the time frame we required. Even five years ago this show simply wouldn’t have been possible.”

This makes so much sense and also makes what one can hope, that the finished product will be all that we have hoped it will be. The fact that they were only able to do 13 episodes is a good thing because this makes the story tighter and more focused than 22 episodes ever could. Also in the same article if the show is renewed it would be for 22 episodes. Personally this not a good thing because we the audience do not need that many episodes. Yes it sucks to wait a long time for the next season but guess what? Shows with a shorter episode run seem to do better than a 22-episode run as evidenced by some currently returning shows on TV.
All in all Terra Nova is geared to be one of the most talked about series this coming fall. It already is now even before the show has aired. Are you ready?
What do you think?
The series centers on theShannonfamily as they join the Tenth Pilgrimage of settlers to Terra Nova, the first colony established in this beautiful yet forbidding land. JIM SHANNON (Jason O’Mara), a devoted father with a checkered past, guides his family through this new world of limitless beauty, mystery and terror. Jim’s wife, ELISABETH SHANNON (Shelley Conn), is a trauma surgeon and the newest addition to TERRA NOVA’s medical team. JOSH SHANNON (Landon Liboiron) is their 17-year-old son who is angry to leave life as he knows it behind; upon arriving at the settlement, he finds himself instantly drawn to the beautiful and rule-breaking SKYE(Allison Miller). MADDY SHANNON (Naomi Scott), Josh’s endearingly awkward 15-year-old sister, hopes TERRA NOVAwill give her a new chance to reinvent herself. Although Elisabeth’s medical training secured the family a spot on the pilgrimage, a secret involving their five-year-old daughter, ZOE (Alana Mansour), soon endangers their place in this utopia.
Terra Nova will air on Mondays starting this fall at 8e/p
