Rarely will you see someone without a cell phone in hand or pocket these days and teens have an especially tight relationship with those handy pieces of technology. As evidenced in TV shows like Necessary Roughness where a teen leaving her cell lying around gave her TV mom a peek at her daughter’s social life and The Secret Life of the American Teenager where gossip is exchanged at near super sonic speeds.
But what if teens could take all that texting and put it to good use? They can.
DoSomething.org is launching a massive scavenger hunt in an effort to mobilize teens towards social action. Starting July 11, 2011 they will begin revealing one challenge per day for the next eleven days for teens and their teams (you don’t have to have a team, but it could increase your chances at winning prizes) to complete and compete to win “some pretty cool stuff.” Sign-ups have already begun, so get yourself and/or your team signed up today. Registering only takes about 1-2 seconds, so seriously, don’t delay – check it out and get signed up!
Over the course of the eleven days – July 11-22 – a challenge will be texted to your phone or if you don’t have a phone you can get hooked up with the daily challenges and your check-in via the Do Something website. Upon completing that challenge you will verify your success by following the instructions that have been texted to you. However, you can also verify online; just go to the challenges page, click “complete,” and follow the instructions.
While the official challenges won’t be revealed until the day of, here is a peek at the themes for each day:
~ Day 1: Environment – Recycling and Reuse
~ Day 2: Education
~ Day 3: Violence and Bullying
~ Day 4: Disaster Response and Relief
~ Day 5: Health and Fitness
~ Day 6: Animal Welfare
~ Day 7: Poverty and Homelessness
~ Day 8: Access to Technology
~ Day 9: Troops
~ Day 10: Environment – Energy
~ Day 11: Wildcard!
The Grand Prize winning team will win a trip to LA for the Do Something Awards for up to 11 team members. They’ve got other great prizes- including scholarships and some amazing PCs from Lenovo.
This is the perfect opportunity for teens to become actively involved in making a difference in their communities while having fun and utilizing the technology they love. Get involved and get signed up today. And while the scavenger hunt might be a great jumping off point – use it just as that – a starting place at being more active in your community. DoSomething.org can connect you with a “project of the day” and help you get more involved with a cause that’s already important to you. You’ll never know what a difference you can make until you try.
Good luck! Keep us posted on how you’re doing with the challenges in the comments section below or at TV Moms: The good. The bad. The crazy.
