A breakthrough that cleared six bank robberies across Long Island and in Orange County, New York, was made today with an arrest. Suffolk County Police officers apprehended 58 year old Michael Walsh of East Elmhurst.
Walsh is tied to two robberies in Suffolk County and four others in Nassau County and Newburgh. The first Suffolk County robbery was on June 30thin East Northport, where he had robbed the People’s United Bank branch. The second was the Chase Bank branch in Northport. The Suffolk County Police Department worked in conjunction with the Northport Village Police Department to identify Walsh as the prime suspect.
Multiple items found in Walsh’s apartment were linked directly to the robberies. Among them were a replica 9 mm air gun, a police scanner, cash, and a shoulder bag, all of which matched witness descriptions of items used in the robberies.
Walsh, now charged with two counts of robbery in the 1stdegree, will be held overnight at the 7th Precinct. His arraignment is scheduled for tomorrow at the 1st District Court in Central Islip. He was also connected to bank robberies in Nassau County, as well as in the town of Newburgh in upstate New York. Authorities in both areas have been notified but have not yet taken any actions.
