Breweries are becoming the hip thing to do in the restaurant business these days. Every year a new one seems to open up and join the wave. As with any other business the customers dictate how successful a brewery will be and a local brewery has been catching a lot of attention.
SunKing Brewery, which is located at 135 North College Avenue, has emerged as one of the key players in the brewing industry. Operating with a small team of individuals, SunKing maintains a family atmosphere at the brewery, while enjoying a status that could resemble something that rock stars edure. The brewery itself is simple and efficient. Parking is plentiful and can accommodate cars, motorcycles and bicycles. Helicoptors haven’t been spotted yet, but the lot can easily accommodate one or perhaps even two of them. The building itself has a warehouse feeling to it with fermenters in direct view. There are standing tables located througout the main floor, which provides a social environment for the customers to experience.
Of course most people don’t come to SunKing to hang out. Customers want good beer and that’s the secret behind the SunKing Brewery. So lets examine a couple of them. The Sunlight Cream Ale is their most popular. This beverage can be found at most local liquor stores and many restaurants in the area. The carbonation seems to be calculated perfectly and the hops are well under control. Four 16oz cans of the Sunlight Cream Ale run in the $10.00 – 12.00 neighborhood, depending on where it’s purchased. Next is the WeeMac, which is the Gold Medal winner at the 2010 Indiana Brewers Cup. This beverage has a Scottish Ale feeling and goes down very smooth. Not a bad choice either. In terms of prices, all the SunKing products that are canned are inlined with the Sunlight Cream Ale. Other choices include the Bitter Druid, which carries a 43 IBU and the Osiris Pale Ale, that bumps the IBUs to 50.
Along with the canned choices, SunKing has many more options at the brewery for tastings and growler refills, including the GreatfruitJungle, which was tapped just last night. This beverage is simply amazing. Smooth taste and a relaxing feeling, this beer is definitely worth mentioning. Growler and keg prices change depending on the beverage and size, but are well within budget. This Sunday, SunKing, along with many other restaurant chefs, breweries, wineries, farmers, and artisians will on hand at the annual “Dig-IN” event, located at White River State Park. This event will allow customers to experience the taste of SunKing and many other fine beverages and foods made here in Indiana. With all this attention its pretty obvious that SunKing is providing the city with a high end beverage that’s well within spending budget.
