Summer 2011 creemee tour: The finals
The goal for Gary Krant and this examiner was to find the best creemee in the area or on a short get-a-way. The qualities to look for are: overall taste, texture, variety of flavors, friendliness of staff, location and visual appeal of shop or stand.
This tour began on National Creemee Day, July 18, 2011 and the last stop was Friday, August, 26, 2011.
The Final 3:
Burlington Bay Market & Café, on the waterfront, 125 Battery Street, Burlington, Friday, August 26, 2011. Flavor tried: Gary & Pam both enjoyed Vermont Maple Black Raspberry Twist.
Al’s French Frys, 1251 Williston Road, South Burlington, Wednesday, August 10, 2011. Flavor tried: Gary hadVanilla Black Raspberry Mixed and Pam hadChocolate Vanilla Mixed Chocolate Dipped.
La Spiaggia, 215 Ocean Blvd (Route 1A), Hampton Beach, NH, Tuesday, August 2, 2011. Flavor tried: Gary had Vanilla and this examiner had Watermelon Chocolate Dipped.
The final 3 all had very creamy textures. They all were at unique locations. All the creemee stands on our tour were near the water, whether it be lake or ocean, except Al’s French Frys.
This may have been a factor, though in all fairness, Al’s is within a 15 – 30 minute drive to Lake Champlain.
La Spiaggia had the most variety of flavors, 24 or more soft serve flavors, ranging from almond to apple pie, mango to skittles.
The standard for most shops was vanilla, chocolate, black raspberry and maple, and sprinkles or chocolate dipped.
Al’s was very good, but they did not make into the final 2.
The judging came down to Gary’s and Pam’s votes for A) Taste B) Texture and C) Overall experience.
Gary gave the highest score to Burlington Bay in all areas.
Pam gave the highest score to Burlington Bay in texture and overall experience, but not in taste.
Gary and Pam both gave Spiagga the highest score in taste and texture, but not overall experience.
By only a one point margin, the winner of the Summer 2011 Creemee tour is Burlington Bay Market & Café! Congratulations!
