Stock your vegan kitchen: Make your own taco seasoning

by jolt left

This Examiner’s son loves tacos, and in searching for a vegan-friendly taco seasoning mix we discovered that many brands have sugar in them. Not knowing the source of the sugar, we were unable to determine if the sugar was processed in a vegan-friendly way.

They say that necessity is the mother of invention, and that’s how this vegan-friendly taco seasoning recipe came about. We use TVP (texturized vegetable protein) as a meat substitute, but you an use soy crumbles, seiten or firm tofu.

  • What is TVP and how do you reconstitute it?

This taco seasoning recipe is fine for meat eaters as well. It’s very inexpensive to make, much less expensive than the envelopes of taco seasoning you find in the grocery store.

The 21-Day Vegan Kickstart begins September 5, 2011, or you can start the PETA 30-day Vegan Challenge at anytime.

Western New York shoppers can find TVP (texturized vegetable protein) in the bulk section at Lexington Co-op. They also carry seiten in the refrigerator section.

Taco seasoning mix recipe

(equal to 1 package)

Ingredients:

3 Tbsp. chili powder

2 Tbsp. minced dried onion or 1 Tbsp. onion powder

3 tsp. garlic powder

2 tsp. paprika

2 tsp. salt

1 tsp. cumin

1/2 tsp. black pepper

1/2 tsp oregano

1/2 tsp. crushed dried red pepper (use 1 tsp. of you like it hot)

1 tsp. cornstarch

Rachael’s Recipe Notes:

Double or triple this recipe and store in an airtight container.

Use approximately 1/8 cup per 1 to 1-1/2 pounds meat used, or to taste. The homemade version has a lot more flavor than the store bought package, you may want to play with usage each time. Use it to suit your family’s taste.

Where can you buy TVP online if you can’t find it at your local grocery? Barry Farms has both chunks and granulated flakes. NutsOnline has a few different varieties of TVP flakes, but does not sell TVP chunks. Bob’s Red Mill has only TVP flakes, and does not sell TVP chunks. You can find several varieties of TVP flakes at Bulk Foods.
