If you only make it to the beach once this summer, make sure it is this weekend as, once again, the city of Manhattan Beach hosts the year’s biggest beach party from Friday, July 29th to Sunday, July 31st known simply as 6 Man.
6 Man is the affectionately named beach extravaganza that encompasses, but is not limited to, The Charlie Saikley 6 Man Volleyball Tournament. This particular tournament involves teams of 6 playing in a round robin fashioned tournament in which participants dress in some of the wildest, sexiest, most ridiculous outfits ever. Past teams include French Maids, WWF Superstars., Princess Leias, and of course, South Bay favorites, Magnum PI, and Team Fletch, complete with Laker Jerseys and 8 inch afros.
Even those not participating in the competition join the fun, donning wigs, Mardi Gras beads, super hero outfits, revealing bikinis, and whatever it takes to draw attention to one’s self in this sea of organized pandemonium. Simply put: THIS IS THE GREATEST BEACH PARTY OF THE YEAR.
However this year city officials have stepped up regulations and amped up police presence due to an overwhelming amount of spectators during recent years. This year city officials are strictly enforcing the no alcohol policy fining those in violation up to $600. (MC 4.48.030) Other recently adopted regulations include:
- Prohibit unsealed beverage containers into the event and alcoholic beverages
- No amplified music on Saturday
- No props allowed (basketball hoops, plywood structures)
- No large coolers into event site (small, personal coolers only up to 28 quart)
- No gas or electric generators will be allowed on the beach
- No household furniture allowed (i.e. couches, recliners, etc.)
- No hanging of banners from the pier
- Team themes and customs should not be offensive
The weekend’s official festivities kick off tonight, Friday, July 29th at 7:00 PM with the LA County Lifeguard Championships. The fun continues on Saturday morning at 6:45 with the International Body Surfing Competition at the Manhattan Beach Pier and swings into full gear at around 9:00 AM when the Charlie Saikley 6 Man Volleyball tournament begins. The weekend’s events concludes late Sunday afternoon with a winning team and some very exhausted participants and spectators alike.
