In the immortal words of Monty Python, “And now for something completely different.” In other words, business as usual at the Monkey Wrench Collective in Fullerton. This time you’re in the hands of CTAG (Collaborative Theatre Artist’s Group) Studio and RJ Romero, the ingenious Mr. Pants of Clownzilla renown.
The show in question is “Blank Slate,” running through Aug. 28, and what it amounts to is an hour and 45 minutes of zany fun. It also has something to say about the human condition. But rather than describe it in detail, I suggest you “clear your mind of all expectations,” as a cast member says at one point. Get hip to the idea that pretty much anything can happen in this show, and you won’t be disappointed; the 10-person cast sings, dances, plays instruments and basically runs amok.
The experimental theatre piece, conceived and directed by Romero and written by the rag-tag CTAG Ensemble, was put together from scratch in six weeks and sometimes looks that way—on purpose. Along with the senior member of the largely inexperienced cast, Lew Dentler, it’s the ladies who impress the most: Celeste Lyn, Rae Panas and Cori Knight. RJ himself plays a succession of ludicrous authority figures with aplomb.
Hot tip: New and different is also the concept behind OC-centric, Orange County’s New Play Festival, which runs Aug. 19-Aug. 28at Chapman University’s Moulton Center Studio Theatre. The production features one-act comedies by Ken La Salle, Joni Ravenna, Gene Fiskin and Eric Eberwein. Call 714-902-5716.
