The Gwinnett Braves opened a two game series with the Charlotte Knights Thursday night in Fort Mill, S.C. with a 6-2 loss. The loss keeps Gwinnett (61-50) 1.5 games back of the Durham Bulls (62-48) in the International League South race. Charlotte is in a first meets first series with the IL North leading Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs and were handed a 5-3 loss. Charlotte (53-59) gains a game on the Bulls with the victory and now are 10.0 GB, third in the IL South.
Gwinnett scored in the 3rd inning going up 1-0 and taking the only lead the G-Braves would have in the game. The Knights pushed three runs across in the home-half of the 5th grabbing a 3-1 lead then added a single run in the 7th inning to lead 5-1. Gwinnett got a run back in the top of the 8th inning but then allowed the Knights to score twice in the bottom of the inning to close out the scoring for the night.

LHP Yohan Flande (L, 7-6, 3.72 ERA) made his last start before moving to the bullpen and took the loss. Flande worked 5.0 innings and allowed 8 hits and 3 runs (all earned), walked 1 and struck out 4. He is being moved to the pen due to the recent call-up of RHP Randall Delgado from Double-A Mississippi.He is scheduled to make his first start with Gwinnett in Saturday’s game at Coolray Field. Delgado is one of the Braves top prospects and is ranked by Baseball America as one of the Top 100 prospects in baseball. RHP Cory Gearrin (ND, 3-1, 1.93 ERA) came on in relief in the 6th inning and didn’t allow a run. He gave up a hit and walked a pair of batters while striking out one; RHP Arodys Vizcaino (ND, 1-0, 1.80 ERA), another of the Braves top prospects, pitched 1.0 inning and gave up 1 hit and 1 run (earned) and recorded 1 strike out; LHP Dustin Richardson (ND, 0-0, 4.60 ERA) pitched the 8th inning and allowed 2 runs (both earned) on a hit (a homerun) and a pair of walks.
Gwinnett was limited to three hits in the loss.SS Tyler Pastornicky (.400, 1 HR/6 RBI) drove in both of the G-Braves runs, the first when Jeff Fiorentino scored in the 3rd inning on a sac fly and the second when he hit his first Triple-A homerun in the8th. The homer extends Pastornicky’s hitting streak to 9 games. He was 1-for-3, scored his 14th run in 15 games and has now hit safely in all but one game since his promotion form Double-A Mississippi; in addition to scoring the first run of the game for Gwinnett CF Fiorentino (.254, 3 HRs/14 RBI) reached base twice in four at-bats going 1-for-3 and walking once.

Gwinnett and Charlotte play the final game of the two game set Friday at 7:15 p.m. RHP Erik Cordier (3-7, 5.31 ERA) will get the start for Gwinnett while the Knights will send RHP Dylan Axelrod (2-1, 2.14 ERA) to the mound.
International League News:
The IL announced Monday that 1B Jorge Vazquez and Columbus P Justin Germano have been named the League’s Batter and Pitcher of the week for W/E July 31. Columbus now has had six PoTW winners this season matching the G-Braves for most in the IL.
